DULUTH, Minn. – The Minnesota State Mavericks (16-18-2, 9-17-2 WCHA) forced a decisive third game in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Quarterfinals with a double-overtime victory over the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs at AMSOIL Arena.
Minnesota State struck first at the 3:05 mark of the opening period when
Whitney Tuttle found the back of the net off an assist from
Sophie Stramel to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead.
The game remained tight until 4:35 of the second period when Minnesota Duluth evened the score at 1-1. From there, both teams battled through the remainder of regulation and a full overtime period before the Mavericks sealed the win in double overtime.
Tuttle delivered again with her second goal of the night, this time assisted by
Mika Cichosz and
Lauren Zawoyski, securing the season-saving victory.
In net,
Hailey Hansen turned in a standout performance with a season-high 55 saves.
"I am really proud of the gritty performance we had today to extend our season," said head coach
Shari Dickerman. "Hailey was great again making some timely saves and giving us a chance to win. Our D did a good job of reloading pucks to allow our forwards to hunt on the forecheck. They created some turnovers and Whitney was able to capitalize and score twice. Recovery will be key as we look to close out the series and extend our season another week."
The Mavericks return to the ice tomorrow for Game Three, with puck drop set for 1:00 p.m. at AMSOIL Arena.
