MSU Closes Out Washburn Invite Slate

TOPEKA, Kan. — The Minnesota State softball team (3-8) wrapped up play at the Washburn Invite on Sunday, Feb. 22, falling 7-4 to Fort Hays State (4-5) and 11-2 to Northwest Missouri State (12-5).

In the opener, MSU was unable to recover from an early deficit despite showing resilience late. The Mavericks got on the board in the fourth inning after Maddie Helin advanced to third on a wild pitch and later scored on a center field error to make it 4-1.

The offense continued to generate opportunities in the fifth as Carly Kimmes doubled and eventually scored on an RBI single from Ireland Broderick, trimming the margin to 4-2. Fort Hays State later extended its lead, but the Mavericks kept battling, plating two unearned runs in the seventh inning to pull within three before the comeback attempt fell short at 7-4.

In the circle, Jorey Fry made the start, while Maddie Oetzmann provided steady relief, tossing 4.1 innings with six strikeouts and just one walk. Offensively, Chloe Brandt led the Mavericks with two hits, including a triple, while Broderick added an RBI and a stolen base. Kimmes recorded a double and a run scored, and Avery Dorman contributed an RBI on a sacrifice.

In the second game of the day, the Mavericks faced an early deficit but continued to compete throughout the contest. Minnesota State broke through in the fifth inning when Finley Anderson reached base to spark the rally before Paxton Dekkers lined an RBI single down the left field line to score Nyah Hulbert. Later in the inning, Ryanne Mellum doubled to left field to bring home Kimmes and account for the Mavericks' two runs.

Reese Falish highlighted the relief effort with two innings of work, striking out four and allowing just one earned run, while Lucy Porter added multiple innings in the circle. Dekkers and Mellum each recorded an RBI, and Hulbert added a run scored as MSU closed the weekend with an 11-2 final.

Minnesota State will look to bounce back when it faces Northwest Missouri State on Friday, Feb. 27 at 12:15 p.m. in Shawnee, Kan. at the Top Gun Midwest College Classic.
