SHAWNEE, Kan. — The Mavericks (3-9) faced tough competition during the Top Gun Midwest College Classic, ultimately falling to both Northwest Missouri State (14-5) and Rockhurst (6-5) on Friday, Feb. 27.

In the first matchup, Minnesota State battled hard but ultimately lost 5-0 to Northwest Missouri State. The Bearcats jumped ahead early, capitalizing on a bases-loaded walk in the second inning to score the first run of the game.

A pivotal sixth inning for the Bearcats, highlighted by a two-run homer, sealed the deal at 5-0.

Lucy Porter took the mound for an inning, allowing two hits and one earned run while inducing three groundouts. Ireland Broderick led the Mavericks with two hits and two stolen bases, while Chloe Brandt added a hit and a defensive assist. Hannah Tong reached base twice with a hit and a walk, and pitcher Jorey Fry put in five innings of work, striking out two but conceding eight hits and four earned runs.

In their second game of the day, MSU fell to Rockhurst with a score of 10-2. The Mavericks were sparked by a solo home run, but Rockhurst seized control with a decisive six-run second inning.

Minnesota State replied in the third inning when Finley Anderson launched a solo home run to center, narrowing the gap to 6-1.

The Mavericks added another run in the fourth when senior Gianna Lara doubled to center, and Ysabel Lerma, pinch running for Lara, scored on a throwing error. However, Rockhurst responded with a solo home run, pushing the score to 7-2, and widened the lead in the fifth with three more runs.

Maddie Oetzmann started on the mound for the Mavericks, pitching 1 2/3 innings and allowing six earned runs on five hits, with two walks and one strikeout. Porter took over, pitching three innings while giving up four earned runs, including a home run, and striking out three. Collectively, the MSU pitchers yielded 10 earned runs over 5 1/3 innings.
