Mavericks Use Big Fourth Inning to Power Past Indianapolis, 12-6

JOPLIN, Mo. — Minnesota State (2-1) used a big fourth inning and a 12-hit performance to defeat the Indianapolis Greyhounds (2-5), 12-6, in a neutral-site matchup Sunday.

Minnesota State broke the game open in the fourth, capitalizing on Indianapolis miscues. Pambos Nicoloudes drew a walk and Braxton Vlcko was hit by a pitch to spark the rally. Logan Miller reached on a fielder's choice to score Nicoloudes, and an error allowed Braxton Haggith to cross the plate. Jake Berkland followed with an RBI single, and Louis Magers added another RBI knock to cap a four-run inning and give the Mavericks control.

Berkland powered the offense, finishing with five hits, including two doubles, a triple and a home run, while driving in five runs. His two-run double in the third extended the early lead, and his three-run homer in the fifth gave Minnesota State further separation.

The Mavericks added insurance in the sixth. Ethan Bowers' aggressive baserunning forced a defensive error, and Nicoloudes lifted a sacrifice fly to score Marcus Beatty. CJ Trask provided the final spark in the eighth with a solo home run.

On the mound, Mack Crowley earned the win with five innings of work, allowing three earned runs on five hits while striking out six and walking one. Ben Irsfeld followed with two innings of relief, and Chas Melvin and Gannon Reidinger each contributed an inning to close out the game.

"After a tough one-run, extra inning loss last night, we responded in a exciting way. Crowley competed every pitch and gave us a quality start. Our bats came alive, we used our speed to pressure them, and Jake Berkland showed the impact he can have on our success." said head coach Matt Magers

Up next, Minnesota State remains in Joplin to face Missouri Southern at noon CT on Monday, Feb. 16, at Warren Turner Field.
