WAYNE, Neb. — Minnesota State (18-10, 12-8 NSIC) took down Wayne State (14-12, 10-10 NSIC) 81-69 on Saturday night at Rice Auditorium. The Mavericks were on fire from the free-throw line, sinking a season-best 27 of 30 shots to clinch the win.
The Mavericks came out strong, establishing an early lead with solid scoring in the paint. Senior
Malcolm Jones was a force on the boards, pulling down 8 rebounds and hitting a key jumper to keep the momentum going. Despite a tight first half with several ties and lead changes, Minnesota State capitalized on Wayne State's turnovers, thanks to standout performances from junior
Arhman Lewis and sophomore
Will Opsahl. A late 10–3 run, capped by a Lewis layup after a steal, sent the Mavericks into halftime up 33–24.
In the second half, Minnesota State continued to press on Wayne State's turnovers, with Lewis driving the offense. His layup at 18:34 ignited a scoring burst, including fast-break points from junior
Traijan Sain and Jones, widening the gap to 39–29. The Mavericks kept the lead with sharp free-throw shooting and key defensive stops, highlighted by a crucial block from Jones at 17:33.
Wayne State tried to fight back with 3-pointers, but the Mavericks extended their lead. Junior
Caden Kirkman thrilled with a dunk at 12:50 and added two more from the line later on. Freshman
Colton Benson was clutch, going a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe, including two critical free throws at 1:41 to help seal the deal. Despite a late push from the Wildcats, Minnesota State held strong, wrapping up the game 81-69.
Lewis shone with 21 points, while also snagging four steals and dishing out six assists, marking his 10th straight game with six or more assists. Benson added 16 points, nailing all seven free throws and grabbing two steals. Opsahl chipped in 12 points and five rebounds, and Kirkman contributed 12 points with six crucial free throws and six rebounds.
For the Wildcats, Kai Smith led with 20 points, including four from beyond the arc, and added five assists. Aurrion Harris recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, along with two blocks and two steals. Matt Noll scored 12 points and secured seven boards, while Darshan Thomas was active defensively, blocking two shots.
Next up, the Mavericks will host Winona State on Thursday in their regular season home finale. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Taylor Center.
