Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Turnover Frenzy Fuels #2 Minnesota State’s Win

MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State women's basketball team (22-0, 16-0 NSIC) rolled over the MSU Moorhead (10-10, 7-9 NSIC) with a decisive 97-64 victory, fueled by forcing 28 turnoverson Saturday, Jan. 31. This marks the No. 2-ranked Mavericks' third straight game scoring at least 97 points, a testament to their explosive offense this season.

Natalie Bremer showed her all-around game with 17 points and four steals, while Adeline Kent was perfect from the field with 11 points, nailing two threes. Freshman, Haylee Stokes matched her career high, pouring in 17 points and going 5-for-6 from the line while Mankato, Minn. native Mackenzie Schweim added 16 points, three steals, and three assists.

The Mavericks hit the ground running, jumping out to a 7–0 lead in the first three minutes with a Kent triple and a Bremer layup. They capitalized on MSUM's mistakes, turning turnovers into 14 points and picking off six steals.

Minnesota State kept the pressure on, stretching the lead to 17–2 after a Stokes three at 4:41. Moorhead tried to respond, but Schweim's clutch buckets helped the Mavericks end the quarter up 27–14.

The second quarter saw the Mavericks fend off MSU Moorhead's early push. Forward Mallory Czinano's block and bucket sparked a run for Minnesota State, as turnovers fed into more fast-break points. Stokes continued the scoring spree with a jumper and a three, as the Mavericks' defense smothered MSUM, limiting their chances. The half ended with MSU leading 48–31.

In the third quarter, Minnesota State's dominance persisted. Bremer's layup at 9:39 set off a flurry of inside scoring. Ava Stier's block at 7:54 led to Kent's fast-break jumper, and Stokes' steal set up Stier's three. Bremer's layup and Schweim's late three capped a 32-16 quarter, putting the Mavericks up 80-47.

Despite Moorhead's efforts in the final quarter, the Mavericks remained in control. Free throws from Kent and Stokes kept the lead safe. Stier's defensive plays, including a crucial block and steal, stifled Moorhead's attempts to rally.

Hannah Leverson's three extended the lead, and Rhyan Holmgren's free throws sealed the game, matching Moorhead's 17 points in the quarter. The Mavericks cruised to a commanding win.

"What a great environment for a regular season conference game! It was a great challenge for our team to stay locked in on one another and lean on our defense," said Head Coach Emilee Thiesse. "Our depth and balanced attack continue to bring us a big spark game in and game out. When we can produce forty-four bench points and have four players in double figures, it takes so much pressure off of our offensive attack."

Up next, Minnesota State welcomes Sioux Falls to Taylor Center on Thursday, Feb. 5, for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff, honoring seven Mavericks as part of Senior Night festivities.
