ST. CLOUD, Minn. — The No. 2-ranked Minnesota State Mavericks women's basketball team (14-0, 8-0 NSIC) remained unbeaten with an 83–56 victory over St. Cloud State Huskies (4-9, 1-7 NSIC) on Saturday, Jan. 3, at Halenbeck Hall. Minnesota State's defensive pressure proved decisive, as the Mavericks recorded 28 steals to maintain their perfect record.

Natalie Bremer led the Mavericks with 23 points, going 7-for-8 from the free-throw line while adding seven steals. Senior Mackenzie Schweim matched a career high with 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting and recorded three steals. Rhyan Holmgren contributed eight points and four steals, while Hannah Herzig extended her streak of games with at least three assists to six, finishing with four points, three assists, and three steals.

Minnesota State began the game with strong defensive pressure, forcing St. Cloud into multiple turnovers early in the first quarter. Bremer contributed with a layup and a 3-pointer, helping the Mavericks keep pace with the home team. The visiting team capitalized on turnovers, scoring eight points off turnovers and maintaining a steady lead in the paint, contributing 14 points from inside.

The quarter ended with MSU holding an 18-15 lead, as Lucy Leininger secured a layup in the final seconds to extend the advantage. The Huskies stayed within reach, but the Mavericks' defensive stops and strategic plays allowed them to close the quarter ahead.

MSU seized control in the second quarter, capitalizing on turnovers with relentless defense. Bremer ignited the scoring with a jumper early, and her defensive prowess contributed multiple steals. The team forced 11 turnovers from the Huskies, translating their defensive efforts into fast-break points and a 14–2 advantage in points off turnovers.

Offensively, the Mavericks maintained pressure with effective inside scoring, adding 12 points in the paint. Schweim contributed crucial points off the bench, further extending the lead. The quarter closed with the Mavericks leading 41–29, showcasing a strong defensive and offensive connection.

Defensive pressure proved decisive in the third quarter, as the Mavericks forced 13 turnovers and converted them into 11 points. Herzig opened the scoring with a jumper, followed by Schweim's fast-break layup that pushed the lead to 43–31. Bremer added a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws as the margin continued to grow. The defensive intensity carried through the period, limiting SCSU to just 12 points. The Mavericks claimed a 25–12 scoring edge in the quarter and entered the final frame with a commanding 64–41 lead.

Minnesota State controlled the fourth quarter by pairing defensive stops with efficient offense, forcing seven turnovers and maintaining steady separation from the Huskies. Adeline Kent provided a spark early with a key steal that led to a fast break layup, while the Mavericks bench accounted for 15 of the team's 19 points in the period, winning the margins in both points off turnovers and points in the paint. MSU shot 7 for 17 from the field and added four steals to disrupt the Huskies rhythm, with Haylee Stokes, who recorded a career high five rebounds and knocked down a three pointer in the final minute to seal the 83 to 56 victory.

"Our offense was a bit stagnant at times today and we had to really lean on our defensive toughness to create early looks for us," said Head Coach Emilee Thiesse. "We need to rebound the ball better and limit the fouls on shooters, but all and all, this was a solid defensive effort and a nice start to 2026."

Action continues for the Mavericks on Saturday, Jan. 9, as they head to Bismarck, N.D., to take on the University of Mary at McDowell Activity Center. The contest is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT and will be streamed live on the NSIC Network.
