Bremer Makes History in #2 Mavericks Victory

MANKATO, Minn. — The No. 2-ranked Minnesota State women's basketball team (19-0, 13-0 NSIC) cruised past Northern State (10-9, 5-8 NSIC) with an 81–52 victory Friday night at the Taylor Center, forcing 21 turnovers and converting them into 41 points.

History was made midway through the second quarter. At the 6:53 mark, Natalie Bremer drove in for a layup that pushed her career total to 2,073 points, surpassing Lisa Walter (2,072) to become the all-time leading scorer in Minnesota State women's basketball history.

The Mavericks set the tone early with a strong defensive showing, snagging 11 steals and converting Northern State's mistakes into points. Mackenzie Schweim ignited the team with a fast-break layup and a three-pointer, sparking a quick 7–0 run. MSU kept the momentum going with sharp ball movement, assisting on six of their eight baskets. As the quarter wound down, Bremer hit a jumper and added a fast-break score, pushing the lead. Ava Stier capped off the quarter with a three-pointer, giving the Mavericks a solid 21–10 advantage over the Wolves.

In the second quarter, Minnesota State's defense stayed relentless, turning turnovers into critical points. Bremer's early layup and Rhyan Holmgren's three-pointer capitalized on Northern State's slip-ups. Haylee Stokes' steal set up another layup, keeping the offensive rhythm alive. The Mavericks' bench chipped in with eight points during the quarter. Holmgren and Bremer led a strong finish, with Bremer nailing a fast-break three-pointer to wrap up the half. The Mavericks headed into halftime up 40–27, having outpaced NSU by two points in the quarter.

Minnesota State came out strong in the third quarter, taking advantage of Northern State's turnovers. Stier turned a turnover into a layup right out of the gate, following up with another layup and a free throw to widen the gap. The Mavericks' defense was fierce, forcing 10 turnovers and stifling Northern State's offense. Holmgren played a key role in maintaining pressure, grabbing important defensive rebounds, and adding a late layup. MSU dominated in the paint, outscoring the Wolves 12–6 inside. Finishing the quarter with an 18–11 edge, the Mavericks led 58–38 going into the final quarter.

MSU kicked off the fourth quarter with a decisive scoring surge, capitalizing on turnovers and solid defense. Stier's jumper and free throw at 8:58 provided an early boost. Shantell Harden and Bremer kept the offense rolling with key layups and a three-pointer, stretching the lead to 66–42 by 7:05. Minnesota State remained in control, with Holmgren's layup and free throw at 4:32 pushing the score to 73–50. Despite Northern State's efforts to narrow the gap, the Mavericks continued to dominate. Kent's fast-break jumper at 2:29 added to the lead. The team sealed the win by hitting crucial free throws and maintaining defensive pressure. Hannah Leverson's free throws at 0:44 wrapped up the scoring, and the Mavericks closed the quarter ahead 81–52.

Bremer dropped 22 points, hitting 10 of her 20 shots, including two from beyond the arc. Bringing her career total to 2,085 points. Sophomore Holmgren chipped in 13 points, shared the team lead with three steals, and grabbed four rebounds. Hannah Herzig orchestrated the offense with six assists and added six rebounds to her stat line. Senior forward Stier was pivotal with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting and a pair of steals, underscoring the team's defensive intensity.

Next up, the Mavericks will host Jamestown on Saturday, Jan. 24 at Taylor Center in Mankato, Minnesota, with tip-off slated for 3:30 p.m. CT.
