1/23/2026 10:05:00 AM

BURNSVILLE, Minn.Minnesota State softball was selected to finish third in the NSIC according to the 2026 NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll.

The Mavericks concluded the 2025 season with a 39–20 overall record, including a 21–7 mark in conference play. MSU's postseason run in the NSIC Tournament came to an end in the semifinals with a 5–2 loss to Winona State, before advancing to NCAA Regional play. The season also marked the conclusion of the Lori Meyer era, as the program transitioned leadership with the hiring of former associate head coach Kristle Wolcott as Minnesota State's fifth head coach.

"I'm excited about the chemistry of this team. Their commitment to one another on and off the field has been fun to watch develop over this past semester," said Coach Wolcott. "We have some returners that have done a fabulous job being servant leaders. Our newcomers have jumped in right away ready to work. I look forward to the blend of returners and newcomers representing Minnesota State softball this season."

MSU returns 12 players from last season's roster and welcomes nine newcomers to the program, including eight freshmen and one transfer, Madelyn Bode. A Mankato, Minn., native, Bode previously spent one season at the University of Sioux Falls, where she redshirted due to injury.

Among the Mavericks' key returners is senior Gianna Lara, who enters her final season of competition with Minnesota State. Lara appeared in and started 57 games for MSU last year, primarily at first base. She posted a .322 batting average, recording 56 hits while leading the team in doubles (14) and RBIs (40). For her efforts, Lara earned All-NSIC Second Team honors.

"Gianna brings a veteran presence to the middle of our lineup and defensive staple for our infield. She is a no nonsense player that goes about her business and expects excellence from everyone around her," added Coach Wolcott. "Gianna's competitive nature impacts every game we play."

Minnesota State also returns junior pitcher Maddie Oetzmann, who appeared in 22 games in the circle for the Mavericks last season, including 15 starts. Oetzmann recorded two complete games and one shutout while posting a 3.08 ERA. She struck out 63 batters across 77.1 innings pitched, providing a strong presence in MSU's pitching staff.

"Maddie has battled on the mound for us the past two years redefining her craft along the way. We will lean on her leadership with a young pitching staff and even keel mentality to manage any situation thrown at us. Maddie's growth mindset and tenacity will help her excel this season," said Coach Wolcott.

The Minnesota State softball season begins on Saturday, Feb. 7, as the Mavericks host Minnesota Duluth inside the Maverick All-Sports Dome. The team's first game of the doubleheader is at 12 p.m. followed by a 2 p.m. first pitch.
