Mavericks Make it Five Straight in Win over Wolves

MANKATO, Minn. — Minnesota State (12-9, 6-7 NSIC) battled its way to a 78-67 victory over Northern State (7-12, 7-6 NSIC) Friday night at Bresnan Arena. Capitalizing on the Wolves' 12 turnovers, MSU notched 22 points, showcasing their opportunistic play. The Mavericks have now won their last five games. The win also marked MSU's 300th all-time win at Taylor Center.

MSU hit the ground running with junior Traijan Sain sinking a layup and a three-pointer right out of the gate, giving the Mavericks an early 5-0 lead. This marked Sain's fifth consecutive game scoring at least seven points, underscoring his reliable contributions. Junior Arhman Lewis played a pivotal role, dishing out assists and scoring to keep the Mavericks in control. Lewis's nine assists marked his second straight game hitting at least that number. Meanwhile, key defensive rebounds from senior Malcolm Jones helped sustain MSU's lead under pressure.

Midway through the first half, the Mavericks stretched their advantage to 37-29, thanks to sharp shooting from downtown and a solid defensive front. Known for their long-range prowess, MSU has been hitting 50% from beyond the arc over the past three games. The half ended with MSU narrowly ahead 39-38, despite a late three from Northern State closing the gap.

A balanced attack kept the Mavericks in front as they leaned on their bench for 14 crucial points. Converting five 3-pointers and shooting 86% from the free-throw line, they countered the Wolves' 15 field goals. Despite being outrebounded 19-15, Minnesota State's three steals led to fast-break opportunities, emphasizing their defensive hustle.

In the second half, MSU outscored Northern State 39-29, thanks in part to an 11-for-18 performance at the charity stripe and a 22-16 edge on the boards. The Mavericks' defensive intensity was undeniable, forcing eight points off six Northern State errors and limiting themselves to just two turnovers. Four blocks and four steals highlighted their defensive efforts.

Momentum swung early in the second half, with Jones converting an offensive board into a layup. Successive baskets by Lewis and a steal-turned-score by Jones pushed the lead to 48-42. The Mavericks have been shooting 42.9% or better from the field in their last four outings, a testament to their offensive execution.

Capitalizing on turnovers, junior Caden Kirkman and sophomore Carson Schweim scored on fast breaks, with Kirkman continuing his scoring streak with at least 13 points in consecutive games. Schweim grabbed a career-high nine rebounds, bolstering the team's rebounding edge. A three-pointer from freshman Colton Benson at 6:57 widened the gap further. Despite Northern State's attempts to rally, MSU maintained control, with Jones dominating inside and adding crucial points in the paint.

As time wound down, Benson sank a late three, sealing the 78-67 win for the Mavericks, who showcased their aggressive playstyle with 25 free throw attempts, surpassing their season average. MSU has made at least 17 free throws in eight games this season, highlighting their prowess at the line.

Lewis led the charge with 20 points and nine assists, while Malcolm Jones added 16 points and seven rebounds, along with two blocks. Sain contributed three blocks and two steals, fortifying the defensive effort. Opsahl added two steals and six points, providing solid support.

For the Wolves, Joshua Book led with 19 points, hitting 8 of 14 field goals and adding four assists. Simon Akena chipped in 15 points, with perfect free throw shooting and seven rebounds. James Glenn scored 11 points, recording three steals and two assists. Tobi Obiora made his presence felt defensively, blocking three shots and securing nine boards.

Looking ahead, the Mavericks will host Jamestown on Saturday at Taylor Center, with a tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.
