MANKATO, Minn. – Minnesota State senior goaltender
Alex Tracy (Chicago, Ill.) was named to the Mike Richter Award Watch List on Wednesday (Jan. 14). The 29 goaltenders included by the Hockey Commissioners Association (HCA) come from the United State (9), Canada (13), Sweden (3), Czechia (2) and Slovakia (2). The Mike Richter Award is given annually to the top goalie in men's NCAA Division I hockey since 2014.
Â
There were 11 freshmen, eight sophomores, six juniors and four seniors among those recognized. Eight goalies, including Tracy were on last year's Watch List and two, Tracy and Trey Augustine (Michigan State) were among the four finalists last season.
Â
A committee of voters — made up of a cross section of coaches, administrators, scouts and media — will pare the list down to approximately a dozen semifinalists within the next three weeks and then ultimately choose a winner from three finalists who will be announced in April during the NCAA Frozen Four. A similar award to recognize the top female goalie in the NCAA is also presented by the HCA.
Â
Tracy was named, along with fellow CCHA netminders Rorke Applebee (So., Lake Superior State), Owen Bartoszkiewicz (Jr., Michigan Tech), Oliver Auyeung-Ashton (Northern Michigan) and Josh Kotai (Jr., Augustana).
Minnesota State (12-6-5, 8-4-3 CCHA) is in Houghton, Michigan to face Michigan Tech on Friday and Saturday night. Game times are 6:07 p.m. CT Friday and 5:07 p.m. CT Saturday.
