#2 Mavericks Dominate Minot State in Road Win

MINOT, N.D. — Minnesota State women's basketball (16-0, 10-0 NSIC) defeated Minot State (7-10, 4-6 NSIC), 95-56, at the MSU Dome, on Saturday, Jan. 10, forcing 34 turnovers and scoring 56 points in the paint. The No. 2-ranked Mavericks recorded 23 steals and held a 40-34 rebounding advantage over the Beavers. 

Natalie Bremer spearheaded MSU with 21 points, converting 9 of 17 field goals and adding three rebounds. This marked the seventh consecutive game in which Bremer has recorded 20 or more points, underscoring her offensive prowess. Mankato, Minn. native, Mackenzie Schweim followed with 14 points on 6 of 9 shooting and five rebounds, continuing her streak of securing 4 or more defensive rebounds in two straight games. Hannah Herzig was flawless from the field with 12 points on 4 of 4 accuracy, contributing two assists, marking the ninth consecutive game where she has recorded at least two assists. Senior Ava Stier was pivotal defensively with six steals and five rebounds.

MSU began the first quarter with a solid start, using defensive pressure to force five turnovers from Minot State, resulting in four steals, including an early swipe by Herzig at 9:36. Offensively, the Mavericks capitalized in the paint, scoring 12 points and closing the quarter with a 20-12 lead. Schweim played a crucial role with multiple layups, including a basket at 1:59, assisted by Adeline Kent. Bremer capped the quarter with a 3-pointer at 0:40, securing an eight-point advantage heading into the next quarter.

In the second quarter, the Mavericks capitalized on turnovers, forcing eight and converting them into nine points. Rhyan Holmgren contributed on both ends with a key layup and defensive rebounds, while Schweim and Delaynie Luneckas added points in the paint to sustain momentum. Despite a 3-pointer by Minot's Taryn Hamling, the Mavericks extended their lead with a strong finish, including a three-point play from Bremer. The quarter closed with a 17-13 advantage for Minnesota State, leading 37-25 overall.

Minnesota State opened the third quarter with offensive momentum, highlighted by Stier's quick offensive rebound and score, followed by a fastbreak layup from Herzig, creating a significant lead. The Mavericks' defensive pressure forced nine turnovers throughout the quarter, with contributions from Bremer's 3-pointer and Haylee Stokes' shots from beyond the arc helping maintain control. MSU ended the quarter leading 67–44 with a 30–19 scoring edge.

The Mavericks began the fourth quarter with a strong offensive push, capitalizing on Minot's turnovers to extend their lead. Bremer and Schweim contributed early baskets, including Schweim's 3-pointer at 7:53, pushing the lead to 74-44. The team maintained pressure, forcing 12 turnovers and converting them into points. Stier and Holmgren each contributed key steals leading to fast-break points. Herzig and Natalie Mueller added to the scoring, securing layups off turnovers, as the Mavericks continued to build momentum. The game ended with Minnesota State maintaining their advantage, securing a decisive 95-56 victory on the road, improving their record to a perfect 16-0.

"Our team brought a toughness and an edge with them this weekend," said Head Coach Emilee Thiesse. "Our defensive intensity was exactly what we needed to take some pressure off our offense. We've taken great strides as a team and we are excited to be back home next weekend!"


The Mavericks return home to host Minnesota Duluth on Friday, Jan. 16, with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m. at the Taylor Center in Mankato, Minn.
