EMPORIA, Kan. - The Maverick tennis team competed outdoors at Emporia State on Saturday and fell 7-0 to the Hornets. In doubles the Hornets took No. 1 and No. 3, then carried momentum into a sweep in singles.
Lucie Sliskova came close to victory at No. 4 singles, but fell to Carla Paul Piquer 6-7(4), 7-5, 15-13. MSU tennis has two more dates on its fall calendar, including Northwest Missouri State on Sept. 28 in Maryville, Mo. and the Gustavus October Invitational in St. Peter, Minn. on Oct. 4-5.
"We came out quite slow in some of our doubles," said head coach
Drew Hawthorne. "I thought Alma (Vazquez) and Lucie (Sliskova) did a great job of finishing strong and getting the doubles win, but we have some work to do as a team to secure the doubles point moving forward. In singles, we had several long, tough matches. Two went to tiebreakers and we came up just short in both. It was great to play a strong team such as Emporia State in our fall season. It was a good challenge for us and it's going to help set up the rest of our season for success."
