MSU Stuns No. 18 Northern State with Dominant Sweep

ABERDEEN, S.D. — The Minnesota State volleyball team (11-1, 3-1 NSIC) delivered a statement win Friday, Sept. 26 at Wachs Arena, sweeping No. 18 Northern State (9-3, 1-3 NSIC) with set scores of 25-21, 25-23, and 25-20.

Ellie Kline led the defense with 18 digs in three sets, while Mary Satori added 12 kills and 16 digs to contribute on both ends of the floor. Emily Kern was efficient at the net, posting 11 kills with a .417 hitting percentage and two block assists. Setter Jadyn Lester directed the offense with 41 assists and chipped in a service ace to round out a balanced Maverick performance.

MSU secured the first set against the Wolves with a 25-21 victory. The set saw a back-and-forth exchange of points, with the visitors taking an early 6-5 lead thanks to a kill by Kern. The Wolves responded with strong plays, tying the score at 16-16 following a service ace. However, the Mavericks managed to pull ahead with key contributions, including a kill by Satori to make it 24-21. The set concluded with a service ace by Lester, giving the Mavericks the final point.

The Wolves opened the second set with a quick 3-0 lead, taking advantage of Maverick miscues. MSU answered immediately as Avery Rosenberg sparked the offense with three straight kills to narrow the gap. Northern State regained control midway through the frame, but Minnesota State battled back with steady defense and timely swings, including key kills from Kern and Addison Foor to even the score at 15-15. Down 21-18 late, Minnesota State closed strong, capped by three consecutive kills from Avery Klein to seal the 25-23 comeback win.

The Mavericks carried momentum into the third set, overcoming an early deficit as Satori tied it at 1-1. Kills from Kern and a service ace by Kline helped MSU build a 7-5 lead, which grew to 12-7 with contributions from Foor and Rosenberg. Capitalizing on Northern State errors, the Mavericks stretched the margin to 16-10 and never looked back. Key plays from Kern and Kline kept the Wolves at bay, and Satori delivered the final kill to close out a 25-20 set win.

Head Coach Corey Phelps praised his team's performance, noting they are "starting to realize the potential we have when we play Maverick volleyball and focus on playing fearlessly." He highlighted the comeback in set two as a defining moment, adding that he "couldn't be more proud of the grit we showed tonight, especially at the end of the second set when we came storming back to steal that set."

The Mavericks will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 27, when they travel to Jamestown, N.D., for a 2 p.m. matchup against the newest member of the NSIC, Jamestown at Harold Newman Arena.
