Mavericks Power Past Jamestown in Four Sets

JAMESTOWN, N.D. — Minnesota State (12-1, 4-1 NSIC) overcame an early setback to defeat Jamestown (5-7, 0-5 NSIC) in four sets at Harold Newman Arena on Saturday, Sept. 27. After dropping the first set 23-25, the Mavericks rallied to win the next three sets 25-16, 25-18, 25-12.

Mary Satori led the team with 14 kills on 30 attempts, contributing significantly to her total of 17 points. Avery Klein matched Satori with 17 points, recording 12 kills and three service aces. Jadyn Lester facilitated the offense with 43 assists, while Ellie Kline bolstered the defense by collecting 19 digs.

The Mavericks opened the first set with early attack errors that allowed Jamestown to grab a quick 3-0 lead. Addison Foor and Emily Kern sparked momentum with key kills from Lester's sets, pulling MSU within one at 5-4. Back-and-forth scoring kept the score tight at 10-10, but Jamestown surged late to build a 22-15 advantage. A rally fueled by consecutive kills from Foor and Kern trimmed the deficit to 23-22, though Jamestown closed out the set 25-23.

In the second frame, MSU responded with a strong offensive push. An early kill from Satori, along with an ace from Klein, powered a 7-3 lead. Klein added back-to-back aces in a 10-6 stretch, and despite a brief Jamestown push, Minnesota State held firm. Kern and Olivia Sturgis kept the Mavericks' attack balanced through the middle of the set, while Foor and Madisen Miller added kills to widen the margin. The Mavericks' defense also stood tall, with Avery Rosenberg and Lester combining for blocks that forced Jamestown into miscues. Minnesota State controlled the tempo down the stretch, finishing the set with a service ace from Satori and a decisive kill from Klein to secure a convincing 25-16 win.

The Mavericks carried that momentum into the third set. After a 7-7 tie, a service ace by Kern and kills from Rosenberg and Lester sparked a quick 9-7 lead. Minnesota State's front line took over from there, with Lester and Klein delivering clutch blocks while Satori consistently found seams in the Jamestown defense with timely kills. Sturgis and Foor added steady contributions that extended the advantage to 19-11. Although Jamestown strung together a few late points, the Mavericks maintained control with smart passing and strong defensive coverage. The set was capped by Satori's kill and a service ace that sealed a 25-18 victory, giving MSU a 2-1 match lead.

Minnesota State left no doubt in the fourth. Rosenberg and Lester anchored the defense with early blocks, while Lester's service aces fueled a blistering 7-0 start before Jamestown got on the board. The Mavericks' attack continued to fire on all cylinders, with Klein and Satori racking up kills from both pins and Kern scoring from the middle. Minnesota State never allowed Jamestown to find rhythm, cruising to a 25-12 win behind a final kill from Klein to close the match in dominant fashion.

Head Coach Corey Phelps said Jamestown "came out confident and aggressive, playing a great first set," but added that once his team settled in, "we played well. It's another valuable lesson for our young team. You always respect your opponents and battle from the start." He added that "any time you can go undefeated on the weekend in this conference it's a great weekend, and having one of those wins be against a top 20 team is the icing on the cake."

With the win, the Mavericks move forward to host Sioux Falls on Friday, Oct. 3, at 6 p.m. inside Taylor Center in Mankato, Minn.
