LAKE CITY, Minn. --- The Minnesota State men's golf team finished round one of the Jewell Invitational three under par Monday.
MSU shot a 285 (-3) on day one of the event at the par-72 Jewell Golf Club to finish the day in a tie for sixth place with Augustana. Winona State finished round one in first place with a 276 (-12), with Bemidji State following in second place with a 279 (-9).
Three golfers, including BSU's Julius Arenkiel, Minnesota Crookston's Marc Bofarull and Concordia-St. Paul's Trey Tim, are tied atop the individual standings having shot a 67 (-5).
"We had a really good start to the round," head coach
Alex Schmitz said. "Unfortunately we ran into a tough little stretch on the back nine. We know what we need to do to climb the leaderboard tomorrow."
Freshman
Sam Swavely led the way for the Mavericks in round one as he shot a 70 (-2) to finish the day in 11th. This round included a 33 on the front nine that saw him record four birdies. Sophomore
Michael Johnson followed one stroke behind Swavely in 19th place with a 71 as he notched five birdies as well.
Seniors
Ryan Darling and
Hogan Ordal each finished round one in 23rd place as the each shot a 72 (E). Ordal notched five birdies, while Darling recorded two.
Junior
Karson Patten notched a 78 (+6), while freshman
Waii Chidtawan Wangrungwchaisri finished round one with an 85 (+13). Freshman
Paul Rezko, who competed independently, shot a 78 (+6) also.
