TROY, N.Y. – Minnesota State women's hockey started the 2025-26 season on a high note, defeating Rensselaer 3-0 Friday evening at Houston Field House.
The Mavericks struck first midway through the opening period on the power play when Lauren Goldsworthy buried the season's first goal off assists from Ayla Puppe and Taylor Otremba. Minnesota State controlled much of the first frame, capitalizing on its opportunities despite RPI earning several power-play chances. Goaltender Hailey Hansen was sharp from the start, stopping every shot she faced to preserve the early lead.
In the third period with 1:48 left, Goldsworthy added her second of the night at even strength to push the lead to 2-0 with an empty net goal. The Mavericks continued to apply pressure in the offensive zone, while the defense and Hansen turned away RPI's looks, keeping the Engineers off the board.
Minnesota State sealed the victory late in the third period when Zoe Lopez extended the lead to 3-0 with another empty net goal, with Lauren Zawoyski picking up the assist. Hansen finished with a clean sheet, backstopping the Mavericks to their first shutout win of the year.
"We knew it was not going to be a masterpiece in game one, but we found a way to get the win. Said head coach Shari Dickerman. "It was an outstanding effort in net by Hailey Hansen, especially in the first period when we spent a lot of time shorthanded. Winning the special teams battle usually results in success. Proud of our team and their effort. Looking forward to getting back at it tomorrow afternoon."
The Mavericks and Engineers will meet again Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. CT to wrap up the two-game series.
