WINONA, Minn. – Minnesota State baseball split its Wednesday doubleheader against Winona State at Loughrey Field. The Mavericks took game on earning a 15-6 victory, before the Warriors responded with a narrow 6-5 win in game two.
Game 1 – MSU 15 WSU 6 (7 innings)
In the opener, the Mavericks wasted no time getting on the board, plating eight runs in the first inning alone.
Zach Stroh highlighted the inning with a two-RBI double, while
Aidan Byrne and
Nick Baker each added multi-RBI efforts as MSU jumped out to an early 8-0 lead. The offense stayed hot with three more runs in the fifth and two in the seventh, cruising to a 15-6 win in seven innings. Stroh led the way with three hits and three RBIs, while
Louis Magers added a two-run double.
Game 2 – MSU 5 WSU 6 (9 innings)
The Mavericks took an early 2-0 lead thanks to heads-up base running by Magers and a timely RBI single from
Lincoln Berry. However, Winona State responded with a three-run fifth inning to take a 3-2 advantage. MSU fought back to tie it 5-5 in the seventh, but the Warriors would walk it off in the bottom of the ninth, handing the Mavericks a 6-5 loss.
With the split, Minnesota State moves to 26-3 on the season. The Mavericks return to action this weekend for a home series against Bemidji State April 12-13.
