MINOT, N.D. – A dominant day at the plate, led by
Ike Mezzenga and a five-homer showing in Game 1 lifted Minnesota State baseball to a doubleheader sweep of Minot State Saturday at Corbett Field. The Mavericks rolled to an 11-3 win in Game 1 before blanking the Beavers 7-0 in Game 2. MSU extended its winning streak to six.
Game 1 – MSU 11 Minot State 3 (7 innings)
The Mavericks wasted no time jumping ahead, as
Louis Magers crushed a two-run homer in the first, followed by
Nick Baker's two-run shot in the second.
Aidan Byrne added to the early barrage with a two-run home run of his own in the third.
Minnesota State padded its lead in the sixth when
Zach Stroh and
Matthew Fleischhacker delivered key hits to make it 10-2. Mezzenga capped off the scoring in the seventh with a solo home run, his first of two on the day.
The Mavericks pounded out 13 hits in the opener, with Stroh leading the way with three. Byrne, Magers, Baker, and Mezzenga each recorded multiple RBIs. The pitching staff kept Minot State in check, allowing just three runs and stranding five runners.
Nathan Culley (7-0) collected the win. He tossed 6.0 innings and allowed two earned runs, walked two and struck out six.
Game 2 – MSU 7 Minot State 0 (9 innings)
Mezzenga opened the scoring with a solo homer in the first inning and doubled in the fourth to set up Magers' second home run of the day.
Stroh continued his hot streak with a bunt single in the fourth and added an RBI single in the eighth to help put the game out of reach. He finished the doubleheader with five hits.
On the mound, MSU's pitching staff combined for a shutout, scattering just eight hits while stranding seven Beavers. Starter
Sam George (3-0) earned his third win of the season after going 5.0 innings, allowing nine hits and striking out six.
Minnesota States improved to 23-2 overall, 17-1 NSIC. The teams will play again Sunday in a doubleheader to conclude the series. The first game begins at 1:30 p.m.
