MINNEAPOLISMadison Mashuga one-timed a shot through in double overtime and Minnesota State women's hockey upset No. 3 Minnesota Saturday afternoon at Ridder Arena, evening the WCHA quarterfinal series at one game apiece.

"I thought we competed hard and made some great plays," said head coach Shari Dickerman. "Our special teams came through for us and Hailey Hansen was great in net. We wanted to keep our season alive and found a way to get it done."

The Mavericks struck first in the opening period, with MacKenzie Bourgerie finding the back of the net, assisted by JuliAnna and Jenessa Gazdik. Minnesota State carried a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

Early in the second period, the Mavericks extended their lead when Claire Vekich capitalized on a power play opportunity, scoring just one minute into the frame with assists from Jamie Nelson and JuliAnna Gazdik.

The momentum continued as Sydney Langseth added another goal three minutes later, with the Gazdik twins once again providing the setup. However, the Gophers responded quickly, netting their first goal of the game just a minute later. Minnesota added another tally in the ninth minute, cutting the Mavericks' lead to 3-2 heading into the final period.

The third period started with a bang as Alexis Paddington scored just 15 seconds in, assisted by Kamryn Van Batavia and JuliAnna Gazdik, to give the Mavericks a two-goal cushion. But the Gophers refused to back down, quickly answering back to tie the game and set the stage for a thrilling conclusion.

Both teams earned power play chances in overtime but did not convert before Mashuga's game-winner.

Hailey Hansen broke the school record for saves in a game with 66 saves.

The teams meet again on Sunday at 3 p.m. CT at Ridder Arena.
