Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Mavericks Tie 1-1, Beavers Win Shootout

MANKATO, Minn. – No. 14 Minnesota State men's hockey played Bemidji State to a 1-1 overtime tie Friday night at Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center. Jackson Jutting scored the only goal for either team in the shootout for the Beavers.

The Mavericks (22-8-3, 17-5-3 CCHA) and Beavers (13-15-5, 10-11-4) square off again Saturday night at 6:07 p.m. CT to conclude the regular season.

Luigi Benincasa sprung Kaden Bohlsen through the neutral zone and the senior made a nifty move around the right pad of Mattias Sholl for the first goal of the game at 2:22 of the first period. Campbell Cichosz also assisted on Bohlsen's ninth goal of the season.

The Mavericks generated chances on a 4-on-3 power play to the five-minute mark but failed to convert.

Even 7-7 in shots in the middle frame, the teams skated to a scoreless period. In the third, Noah Quinn knocked in the puck on the back post to tie the game on the power play for Bemidji State at 6:10. Both teams spent extended time on the power play. MSU finished 0-6 while BSU converted on 1-5 with the extra man.

Minnesota State's top line, including Rhett Pitlick and Josh Groll turned over Bemidji State behind their own goal with the final seconds ticking off in the third period, but Groll sent his shot high.

The Mavericks enjoyed time on a delayed penalty and ensuing power play 4-on-3 but Sholl shopped all five shots he faced in the extra session. He also turned away Bohlsen, Pitlick and Carrabes in the shootout as Jutting's third attempt for the Beavers proved decisive.

Having split a two-game set in November against Bemidji State, the rubber match of the season series comes down to Saturday night in Mankato. The Mavericks plan to celebrate their ninth MacNaughton Cup regular season trophy with an on-ice presentation following the game.
