Mavericks Bounce Back with Win over Chadron State

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Minnesota State (5-2, 0-0 NSIC) defeated Chadron State (1-4, 0-0 RMAC) 81-52 at Stewart Center on Saturday night. Minnesota State connected on 12 three-pointers, contributing to their commanding lead, while Chadron State struggled with just two made from beyond the arc.

Minnesota State opened the first half with a strong offensive start, establishing an early lead. Junior Arhman Lewis set the tone with back-to-back free throws and a 3-pointer, helping the team to a 5-0 start. The team maintained momentum by capitalizing on fast breaks and second-chance opportunities, leading to consistent scoring. Minnesota State extended their advantage with a series of 3-pointers, including crucial shots from freshman Colton Benson and Lewis. The visitors outscored Chadron State, particularly in points off turnovers and fast-break scenarios. A solid defensive effort, combined with effective rebounding, enabled Minnesota State to finish the half ahead 39-24.

Minnesota State capitalized on a strong 3-point shooting performance, sinking seven 3-pointers to outpace Chadron State. Their offensive efficiency was bolstered by a 27-19 rebounding advantage, which included nine offensive boards that led to eight second-chance points. Minnesota State also made the most of turnovers, turning four Chadron State miscues into six points. At the end of the first half, Minnesota State led 39-24.

Minnesota State started the second half strong, extending their lead with a series of successful possessions. Early in the half, Benson hit a 3-pointer, assisted by junior Traijan Sain, to advance the score to 43-26. Malcolm Jones added a layup, and Sain followed with two free throws, pushing the advantage further. Minnesota State continued to dominate offensively and defensively, with Sain contributing significantly, including a 3-pointer and a layup, while Jones added another layup to maintain momentum. Chadron State managed a few scoring attempts, but Minnesota State kept control, with Caden Kirkman and Jones both executing pivotal defensive rebounds.

As the half progressed, Minnesota State maintained their offensive efficiency with contributions from multiple players. Junior David Harmon capped off the scoring with back-to-back 3-pointers, ensuring Minnesota State ended the half ahead. The half concluded with Minnesota State leading 81-52.

Minnesota State asserted control in the second half with a 42-28 scoring advantage, showcasing a balanced offensive attack. They converted 15 of 32 field goals, including five 3-pointers, and dominated the paint with 18 points, while Chadron State managed 10 of 28 from the field. Minnesota State's bench contributed significantly, adding 21 points, and the team capitalized on turnovers, scoring seven points off Chadron State's eight miscues. At the end of the half, the score stood at 81-52 in favor of Minnesota State.

Lewis led the team with 16 points, converting four 3-pointers and adding four assists. Junior Caden Kirkman was dominant on the boards, collecting 12 rebounds while scoring eight points. Senior Malcolm Jones contributed 13 points and secured nine rebounds. Benson added 10 points, including two 3-pointers, and grabbed five rebounds.

Mack Keighran led Chadron State with 12 points, converting 8 of 9 free throws. Blessing Adesipe contributed 13 points, shooting 4 for 7 from the field and grabbing eight rebounds. Zach Smith added 11 points and dished out three assists. Isaiah Randolph was active on defense, recording three steals.

Looking ahead, Minnesota State will open its NSIC schedule at home this Tuesday as it hosts St. Cloud State. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Taylor Center.
