#14 Mavericks Down Huskies 3-0 on Friday

MANKATO, Minn. – Reid Morich and Alex Zetterberg scored their first goals of the season to help No. 14 Minnesota State shut out Michigan Tech 3-0 Friday at Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center in CCHA men's hockey.

The Mavericks outshot the Huskies 27-12 and senior goaltender Alex Tracy notched his ninth career clean sheet. The teams conclude the series Saturday at 6:07 p.m. CT. Minnesota State (7-2-4, 4-1-2 CCHA) remained undefeated in regulation since October 10. Michigan Tech (8-4-1, 5-1-1) lost for the first time in their previous six outings.

The Mavericks held the Huskies without a shot on goal for more than 16 minutes to open the first period. Then Jack Smith scored on the power play from the right dot by putting away his own rebound. Bergmanis and Lemyre assisted at 14:47. Luigi Benincasa fed Alex Zetterberg for a one-timer near the eight-minute mark but Owen Bartoszkiewicz sprawled to make the save for MTU.

The puck deflected off of Jacob Bonkowski's skate and Morich skated through the neutral zone and deposited the game's second goal at 11:37 of the second period.

Alex Zetterberg made it 3-0 for the Mavericks near the mid-point of the third stanza at even strength. The Mavericks finished 1-1 on the power play and killed one penalty. Both teams won 20 faceoffs.

"Twelve games in and maybe not always the direction you wanted to go and something's happened in a bad way with injuries but in a good way with stepping up. I think it's actually glued us," said head coach Luke Strand. "For the group to stack shifts, we were able to command some things and we'll get another version of Tech tomorrow. They're a really good team."
