PITTSBURG, Kan. — Minnesota St. (3-1, 0-0 NSIC) defeated Henderson St. (0-2, 0-0 GAC) 93-84 at John Lance Arena, bolstered by 13 three-pointers.
"The guys really had a selfless weekend on both ends of the court," head coach
Matt Margenthaler said. " It was great to see some individuals have a breakout weekend as well."
Minnesota State began the half with a strong offensive showing, taking an early lead over Henderson State. Freshman
Colton Benson connected on a 3-pointer just 33 seconds into the game, assisted by junior
Arhman Lewis, to set the tone. The team continued to build momentum with a series of successful plays, including a Lewis-assisted dunk by junior
Caden Kirkman at 18:54.
Midway through the half, the Mavericks maintained control with efficient ball movement and scoring. Junior
Traijan Sain's 3-pointer at 11:46, assisted by sophomore
Joe Buchanan, extended the lead to nine points. The Mavericks capitalized on their shooting accuracy, hitting nine 3-pointers and finishing the half ahead 51-37.
Minnesota State surged with a key sequence early in the second half, highlighted by Benson's three-pointer at 18:46, assisted by Lewis. Lewis continued to make an impact with consecutive three-pointers, extending their lead to 68–49 by 15:45. The Mavericks capitalized on the Reddies' turnovers, with Sain stealing and converting a fastbreak layup at 2:11.
Despite efforts from Henderson State, including a late three-pointer by Zaveion Okoh, Minnesota State maintained control. Senior
Malcolm Jones contributed a series of successful free throws and layups, ensuring Minnesota State finished the half ahead. The game concluded with a final score of 93–84 in favor of the Mavericks.
Lewis scored 23 points, including three 3-pointers, and added five assists. Benson tallied 18 points, converting six of eight attempts from beyond the arc. Sain posted 17 points and recorded four steals while also collecting six rebounds. Jones contributed 10 points and registered two blocks along with four rebounds.
Okoh led the Reddies with 18 points, including two 3-pointers, and contributed six rebounds and one block. Deazhon Perkins matched his scoring output with 18 points, shooting 8-for-11 from the field, and added two rebounds and one steal. Xavier Owens also made a significant impact with 15 points, connecting on 7-of-12 attempts, and grabbed three offensive rebounds. Tyson Whybrew delivered a perfect shooting performance, scoring six points on 3-for-3 shooting, while recording two blocks and six total rebounds.
MSU's next game will take place at home in Taylor Center against Crown on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m.
