Mavericks March to Overtime Again, Murr Celebrates Game-Winning Goal

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Junior Evan Murr (Stillwater, Minn.) scored 29 seconds into overtime, sending Minnesota State to a 2-1 victory over Lake Superior State Friday night at Taffy Abel Arena in CCHA men's hockey. It marked Murr's second career two-goal game and represented the first overtime game-winner for the Mavericks in six extra sessions this fall. Friday was also the team's fourth consecutive overtime game.

Murr ended the 3-on-3 just 29 seconds after the initial faceoff. Luigi Benincasa and Tristan Lemyre assisted on the play, giving the Mavericks their eighth straight win head-to-head against the Lakers.

The victory was also a milestone for goaltender Alex Tracy (50-24-11) and head coach Luke Strand (50-26-9) as both marked their 50th career wins at Minnesota State in Sault Ste. Marie.

With six overtime games through their first 11 regular season contests, the Mavericks improved to 1-1-4 after regulation.

MSU also scored the first goal of the evening. At 4-on-4 on ice strength, Murr and Jacob Conrad broke the 0-0 deadlock at 7:45 of the second period. The defensive duo started the play deep in their own zone, then executed a give-and-go across the line as Murr wired a wrist shot. The former Laker, Conrad collected his second assist and fourth point of the season.

Sasha Teleguine tied it 1-1 at 12:27 of the third period, an even-strength tally from a left point slap shot after passes from Evan Bushy and John Herrington.

Later, the Mavericks came up empty on their fourth power play opportunity. Tracy gobbled up a rebound through traffic at the top of the crease, and Rorke Applebee gloved a save in acrobatic fashion with two seconds left in regulation for LSSU.

Lemyre seized the puck back from the Lakers behind the net and fed it in front for Benincasa, who faked a shot and found Murr streaking up the right side. Murr one-timed the pass past Applebee at the far post. Murr leads MSU blueliners with five goals on the season.

Minnesota State's penalty kill finished 3-3. Tracy stopped 37 shots, including 20 in the first period, while Applebee totaled 39 saves. The Mavericks went 33-67 in the faceoff circle. Murr collected his sixth career game-winning goal.

The Mavericks (5-2-4, 2-1-2 CCHA) look to finish off a series sweep of the Lakers (3-7-1, 0-5-0 CCHA) when the teams meet again Saturday, Nov. 15 at 5:07 p.m. CT. Fans can tune in to AM 1420 KTOE.
