Balanced Offensive Attack Propels #11 Mavericks to 11th Consecutive Win Over Golden Eagles

MANKATO, Minn. –  The No. 11 ranked Minnesota State Mavericks (15-2, 12-0 NSIC) dominated Minnesota Crookston (6-10, 4-6 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon, 95-56. This is the third straight game where the Mavericks score 95 or more points. The team also extended its win streak to 11 games with the victory.
 
Natalie Bremer led the team with 20 points on 7-16 shooting. Freshman Elisabeth Gadient tied her career-high with 17 points and grabbed four steals to lead the team. Redshirt freshman Shantell Harden also scored a career-high 10 points in the win and scored the first six points of the fourth quarter.
 
Destinee Bursch made the first bucket of the game with a driving layup through the lane. After the Golden Eagles scored their first bucket of the game, Ava Stier made her first bucket of the game to put the home team up 6-2. Both teams traded free throws on opposite ends until Natalie Mikrot from UMC nailed a three-pointer to make it a one-point game. Freshman Rhyan Holmgren made a flurry of free throws and fellow newcomer Gadient made a nice up-and-under to put Minnesota State up 12-7. NSIC scoring leader Emma Miller made her first basket of the game to cut the Maverick lead to three, but Gadient made another layup to kick the advantage back to five. Minnesota Crookston made it a one-point game with a layup and tied it with a free throw. The Mavericks took the lead back as Stier found Gadient cutting across the paint for an easy layup. The freshman made another layup with five seconds left in the quarter to give MSU an 18-14 lead after 10 minutes.
 
Bremer made her first field goal of the contest to put her team up by six, thanks to a sharp back-cut and a great pass from Bursch that led to an easy lay inside. Miller made a shot for Minnesota Crookston, but Stier sunk a three-pointer to put MSU up 24-16. Miller grabbed a long rebound and made a fastbreak layup and a teammate made a three-pointer to cut the Golden Eagle deficit to three. Minnesota State scored 12 straight points in less than two minutes to go up 36-21. Bremer posted up and wiggled her way into the lane for a layup, which gave her 10 on the day. She made another layup and found Harden for a jumper to put MSU up 44-23. Some nice ball movement led freshman post Mallory Czinano to find a wide-open Bremer, who sunk a baseline jumper to put Minnesota State up 46-25. Minnesota Crookston made the last two buckets of the half to make it a 46-29 game after 20 minutes.
 
MSU shot 46% of its field goals in the first half and made 11-13 from the charity stripe. The team outrebounded the Golden Eagles by eight and ended the half with nine assists. The Mavericks forced 14 turnovers and scored 16 points from those takeaways.
 
Bremer ended the half with 14 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Gadient had 12 first-half points on 6-9 shooting. She also had two steals in the first half. Holmgren made both of her shot attempts and all four free throws to contribute eight points toward the Maverick effort. She also led the team with three first-half steals.
 
Bremer scored the first basket of the second half after Stier grabbed an offensive board and dished it to her for an easy look inside. Stier made a jumper on the Mavericks' next trip down the court. Miller capped off a 6-0 run for the Golden Eagles to make it a 50-35 game with 6:55 remaining in the third quarter. Minnesota Crookston's Riley Jenkins continued to cut into the Maverick lead with a three-pointer. Lilly Nuytten made an and-one layup after she grabbed an offensive rebound to put MSU back up by 15. Maverick minutes leader Mackenzie Schweim made her first bucket of the game with a layup off an offensive rebound of her own. Bremer put Minnesota State up by 21 and reached 20 points with a layup, marking her 10th 20-point output this season. Gadient made her first layup of the second half with a euro-step and Bursch sunk a three to put the team up 65-41. Miller made a three-pointer with 0:19 left on the clock, but Gadient swished a three of her own to give Minnesota State a 68-44 lead through three quarters.
 
Harden kicked off the fourth quarter with back-to-back-to-back layups to put Minnesota State up by 30, which led to a Minnesota Crookston timeout. Out of the break, the Mavericks scored eight quick ones before another timeout was called. The lead increased to 40 after Adeline Kent made a nice interior pass to Delaynie Luneckas, who sunk a baseline two. The Mavericks scored the first 18 points of the quarter before the Golden Eagles made a free throw with 3:42 left in the game. Freshman Lucy Leininger got the Mavericks to 90 points with a layup. Kent made the last shot of the game for Minnesota State, a three-pointer that closed out a 95-56 win for the No. 11 team in the nation.
 
Minnesota State ended up shooting 51.4% from the field (38-74 FG) against the Golden Eagles. The team made four three-pointers and sunk 15-18 from the free-throw line (83.3% FT). MSU outrebounded UMC 46-31 and dished out 22 assists. The defense ended with 19 steals and 25 points off turnovers. The Maverick bench contributed 34 points. The team dominated the paint, outscoring the Golden Eagles 58-22 inside.
 
Bremer led all scorers with 20 points. She shot 7-16 from the field, grabbed five rebounds and ended with three assists and two steals. Gadient tied her career-high with 17 points on 8-12 shooting and tallied a team-high four steals. Bursch scored 11 points and dished out six assists. Harden set a new career-high with 10 points. The redshirt freshman also grabbed four boards in her ten minutes of action.
 
Minnesota Crookston shot just 35.1% from the field (20-57 FG) and turned the ball over 26 times in the loss. The Mavericks held Miller, the conference's leading scorer, to just 14 points in the game.
 
The homestand continues for Minnesota State next weekend, as the Mavericks take on MSU Moorhead (6-10, 4-6 NSIC) and St. Cloud State (9-6, 6-4 NSIC). The team plays the Dragons on Friday, January 17 at 7:30 p.m. and will take on the Huskies on January 18 at 5:30 p.m.
