MANKATO, Minn.-- No. 17 Minnesota State (5-1-2) defeated the University of Mary (4-1-1) 2-0 Sunday afternoon.
Both teams had chances with each team recording five shots on goal. In total, UMary out shot MSU 15-12
The scoreless tie was broken in the 26th minute of the first half as sophomore Maddix Archer found the back of the net for her third goal this season, giving MSU the 1-0 lead. The Mavericks held their 1-0 lead into the second half.
Early on in the second half, freshman Alicia Hoffman netted her third goal of the season in the 50th minute to put the Mavericks up 2-0. Junior Avery Korsching collected her second assist of the season on the goal by Hoffman.
In total, the Mavericks had two corner kicks, while holding the Marauders. In its previous match against Southwest Minnesota State, UMary tallied 19 corner kicks
"We knew it would be tough as they are always organized and they're sitting right behind us in the standings," head coach Brian Bahl said. "They had 19 corners kicks when they played Friday and we held them to zero today."
"They're a really physical team," stated Archer. "We all kept our heads up, we battled through it and found a way to take the W."
No. 17 Minnesota State is back in action next weekend as it faces Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State on the road.
