4/11/2024 10:14:00 PM

Long Beach, Calif. – Minnesota State is competing at multiple invites this week in California, starting with the Pacific Coast Invitational. The Mavericks had a successful first day with four first-place event finishes and seven athletes getting nationally ranked marks.

Starting the day strong, a team made of junior D'Eric Smith, junior Jabez Reeves freshman Richlu Tudee, and senior Shemar Miller ran a 4x100 relay in 40.04 seconds to cross the line first and place atop the podium. This time places the quad second on the MSU all-time top outdoor performances list, fourth overall nationally for the season, and breaks the meet record of 40.60s set by Wyoming in 2017.

Reeves claimed another championship finish in the 100m dash, running a 10.37s with a 1.8m/s wind speed. This time is good for sixth on the MSU all-time performances list and 12th in the national rankings.

In the 110m hurdles, junior Jalen McGee finished in the top 15 at 12th with a time of 14.20s (3.5m/s wind) and now ranks fifth overall on the MSU all-time list, along with 20th nationally.

With a personal best time in the 200m dash, Tudee placed eighth with a time of 21.46 seconds.

To finish running events for the day, junior Junior Pontes Da Veiga ran a 48.46s in the 400m dash to finish 13th in the event. Not far behind was sophomore Qai Hussey, landing in 15th with a time of 48.60s.

Junior Jacob Ziebarth tied for sixth in the high jump, with a jump of 2.01m (6' 7").

With an incredible leap in the long jump, senior James Gilbert placed first with a jump of 7.87m (25' 10") wind speed at 3.0m/s, and also ranks first in the national polls for the 2024 outdoor season. This mark breaks the meet record set in 2023 and meets the minimum standard to qualify for the 2024 USA Olympic Trials. McGee also competed, with a 12th-place jump of 7.30m (23' 11.5"), also ranking 12th on the MSU all-time list.

Miller closed out the day with the final championship mark in the triple jump, with a mark of 15.27m (50' 1.25"). This mark is good for 6th on the MSU all-time list and 6th in the national rankings. Senior Onyekachi Ukaobasi placed fourth after a jump of 15.00m (49' 2.5") and secures a spot at 12th nationally currently. Tying for sixth was junior Jordan Spencer, jumping for 14.79m (48' 6.25"). This ranks Spencer 15th on the MSU all-time list, and ties him for 23rd nationally.

Minnesota State looks to continue their success during competition in the next few days of competition, starting tomorrow at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
