Sioux Falls, S.D. --- Minnesota State (6-9, 2-3 NSIC) fell to Northern State (5-4, 1-0 NSIC) by a final of 8-3 Saturday afternoon at Sioux Falls Stadium.
The Mavericks put the pressure on NSU in the top of the first scoring two runs off Wolves starter Max Otto.
Sophomore
Matthew Fleischhacker got the Maverick offensive going with a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. The next batter, junior
Aidan Byrne ripped a hit down the right field line legging out this fifth career triple scoring Fleischhacker for his 16th RBI of the season.
Two batters later, Junior
Zach Stroh managed to plate Byrne with his first sacrifice fly on the season collecting his eighth RBI on the year giving the Mavericks a 2-0 lead.
MSU's lead would be short-lived as NSU platted six unanswered runs throughout the next seven innings. Junior
Nick Baker managed to slow the Wolves' momentum in the top of the eight with an RBI single scoring senior
Ryan Wickman cutting the Mavericks' deficit to three.
The Wolves would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the eighth to seal NSU's win.
"It was a very competitive game until the last couple innings when Northern State came up with some big plays," stated head coach
Matt Magers. "I'm excited to see how we bounce back with three games left in the series."
The Mavericks are back in action tomorrow to take on the Wolves in a doubleheader as action kicks off at noon from Sioux Falls Stadium.
