Sioux Falls, S.D. --- Minnesota State (8-9, 4-3 NSIC) swept Northern State (5-6, 1-2 NSIC) in Sunday's baseball doubleheader by finals of 17-3 and 6-1 at Sioux Falls Stadium.
GAME 1 - Minnesota State 17, Northern State -3
In game one, the Mavericks got the scoring started in the top of the second inning and registered their first of two five-run innings. Minnesota State piled on fourth runs in the fourth, three in the sixth, and five in the sixth.
Seven different Mavericks recorded at least one RBI in game one while ten crossed the plate. Sophomore
Matthew Fleischhacker, junior
Aidan Byrne, and senior
Ryan Friedges highlighted the Maverick offense in game one, collecting three hits each while registering at least one RBI and two runs. Byrne led the group with his third career 4-RBI performance while scoring two runs in the game.
Junior
Spencer Wright (2-1) earned his third career win going five innings and allowing three runs on four hits while collecting a season-high five strikeouts on the day.
GAME 2 - Minnesota State 6, Northern State 1
MSU got the scoring started in the third inning in the second game of the doubleheader on a sophomore
Louis Magers RBI single scoring Fleischhacker giving the Mavericks the early 1-0 lead.
The Mavericks continued to work NSU starter Michael Chevalier (0-3) in the top of the fourth as sophomore
Tanner Thompson, senior
Hunter Ranweiler, and
Fleischhacker all worked one-out walks to load the bases.
Byrne legged out an infield single scoring Thompson. The next batter, senior
Ryan Wickman drove in another on a sacrifice as Ranweiler scored the Mavericks' third run in the game.
Byrne and Wickman capitalized again on similar opportunities in the top of the six to extend the Mavericks' lead by five.
Northern State and Minnesota State notched three runs each in the final three frames, resulting in MSU securing its eighth victory on the season.
Junior
Jake Matthaidess (1-1) was tabbed with his first win in the Purple and Gold, going six innings and allowing one run on three hits with a season-high five strikeouts.
"A strong offensive performance from several players today helped get two wins today," head coach
Matt Magers stated. "Solid pitching from Wright and Matthaidess led us to victory."
The Mavericks are back in action tomorrow to finish its four-game series against NSU. The first pitch is scheduled for noon at Sioux Falls Stadium.
