WAKEFIELD, Neb. --- Junior
Zach Stroh launched Minnesota State (11-10, 7-4 NSIC) past St. Cloud State (11-10, 7-4 NSIC) with his second home run on the season to walk-off the Huskies Friday afternoon at Graves Park in Wakefield, Nebraska.
Similar to the first game of Thursday's doubleheader, both teams received outstanding performances from their starters. Sophomore
Louis Magers (1-1) and SCSU's
Payton VanBeck (1-3) battled for five innings combining for only three hits paired with ten combined strikeouts.
Minnesota State took advantage of a St. Cloud State error in the bottom of the second assisting the Mavericks' efforts in scoring the game's first run.
Sophomore
Louis Magers got the inning started by working a leadoff walk and advancing to second on a fielding error by VanBeck. Magers was pushed to third on a sacrifice bunt from junior
Zach Stroh and brought home on a fielder's choice. Senior
Ryan Friedges registered his 15th RBI of the season on the play.
After the Huskies took a 2-1 lead off a Sawyer Smith two-run home run in the top of the eighth, head coach
Matt Magers tasked junior
Sean Gamble to shutdown SCSU's momentum in the ninth inning. Gamble delivered a clean inning sending MSU to the bottom of the ninth down one run.
Magers opened the inning with his second leadoff walk on the day and was later pushed to second base on a junior
Nick Baker sacrifice bunt. That would be the last out the Huskies would record as junior
Zach Stroh crushed his second home run on the season over the centerfield fence walking-off St. Cloud State by a final of 3-2.
"A big win in tough conditions to clinch the series,"
Matt Magers stated. "We got impressive efforts on the mound from Magers, junior
Mitch Gutknecht, and Gamble to limit a strong offense."
The Mavericks are back in action on Thursday as they travel to Duluth to take on the Bulldogs in a four-game series. The first pitch on Thursday is scheduled for noon.
