MANKATO, Minn. --- Top-ranked Ohio State (26-2-0, 23-1-0 WCHA) completed its sweep against Minnesota State (10-21-0, 4-20-0 WCHA) after its 6-2 win handing MSU its ninth consecutive loss Saturday afternoon at the Mayo Clinic HSEC.
The Mavericks came prepared for battle as Minnesota State jumped out to the early lead in the opening minutes of the first period. Senior
Charlotte Akervik's rocket from the point just 4:21 into regulation was mishandled by OSU's goaltender allowing sophomore
Whitney Tuttle to hammer home her tenth tally of the season.
After MSU took a one-goal lead into the first intermission, OSU found their footing collecting six goals over the remaining 40 minutes of play while also outshooting Minnesota State 28-14. The Mavericks answered back in the final minutes of regulation on the power play seeing junior
Claire Vekich notch her sixth tally of the season. On the goal, senior
Madison Mashuga and freshman
Jenessa Gazdik registered assists on the play.
"When you're playing the top team in the nation, it needs to be a 60-minute effort, stated head coach
John Harrington when asked about Ohio State scoring six straight goals. "That is something we can learn from in this game and apply it to our efforts against Bemidji State."
Minnesota State is back in action Friday hosting Bemidji State at 6 p.m. from the Mayo Clinic HSEC.
