MANKATO, Minn. – Minnesota State (2-5-1, 0-5-1 WCHA) tied #4 Minnesota Duluth (6-3-1, 5-2-1 WCHA) in overtime at the Mayo Clinic HSEC Saturday afternoon. UMD won the shootout in the eighth round. Tova Henderson was the only player to score in the shootout for either team.
The action started slowly, with the first period ending scoreless despite both teams fighting for an edge. Then, just seconds into the second period, MSU junior
Taylor Otremba seized the lead with her fifth goal of the season, assisted by senior
Shelbi Guttormson. But the Bulldogs responded quickly, tying the game 1-1.
The Mavericks regained momentum early in the third, as senior
Alexis Paddington found the net with her first goal of the season, assisted by sophomore
Jenessa Gazdik. However, the Bulldogs mounted a late comeback, netting two quick goals in the 13
th and 18th minute, putting MSU on the ropes.
With time running out, Guttormson struck again, tying the game 3-3 with help from graduate student
Sydney Langseth to force overtime. Both teams battled hard through the extra five minutes, but neither could break the deadlock 3-on-3.
The game culminated in a nail-biting eight-round shootout, where Bulldogs Tova Henderson decisive goal sealed the win for Minnesota Duluth.
The Mavericks are back in action as they travel to St. Cloud State November 15-16 .
