MANKATO, Minn. --- No. 12 Minnesota State (8-1-3, 7-0-1) notched a 1-0 win against Winona State (4-5-1, 3-5) on Sunday afternoon at The Pitch.
In the first minute of the game a Winona State player was called for a handball in the penalty box. MSU's
Maddix Archer took the penalty kick and found the back of the net for the only score of the game.
The Mavericks outshot the Warriors 18-4, including a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal. MSU held a 9-2 edge in corner kicks as well.
"It was really tough conditions today with the wind and I thought we took advantage of the opportunities that we got but we just didn't put it in the back of the net as much as we would've liked," Head Coach
Brian Bahl said. "Both teams played a strong defensive game.
"All in all I was really proud of how hard we competed in those tough conditions. We'll take a win in this league. It's not easy to win especially when you throw in tough challenging conditions from the weather like that."
Clare Longueville (7-0-2) picked up her fifth shutout of the season as she made two saves.
The Mavericks are back on the road next weekend as they face Sioux Falls on Friday at 7 p.m. and Wayne State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
