MANKATO, Minn. --- Second-ranked Wisconsin (19-4-0, 13-4-0 WCHA) scored three unanswered goals turning a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 Friday evening over Minnesota State (10-14-0, 4-13-0 WCHA) at the Mayo Clinic HSEC.
The Mavericks came into Friday's game with a defensive mindset stacking three Mavericks in the slot in front of junior goaltender
Suzette Faucher. The Mavericks were able to capitalize on a UW misplay on the power play as senior
Jamie Nelson lifted a rocket over the shoulder of goaltender Jane Gervais for her team-leading 13th goal on the season and her first career shorthanded tally as they took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
Just 50 seconds into the second period, sophomore
Whitney Tuttle was able to extend her points streak to seven games after ripping a shot off the Wisconsin goaltender creating a rebound for sophomore
Taylor Otremba to hammer home her sixth goal on the season. On the play, senior
Sydney Langseth notched her team-leading 15th assist and 25th point on the season, now as she has registered a point in 10 of the last 12 games.
The Badgers would answer back with two goals in the second period to knot the game at two before Kirsten Simms scored the game winner at the 6:12 mark of the third period.
"I thought we played a solid game tonight," head coach
John Harrington stated. We did a great job creating chances in the second period but need to sustain that pressure for a full 60 minutes."
Minnesota State is back in action tomorrow as they rematch No. 2 Wisconsin with action starting at 3 p.m. at the Mayo Clinic HSEC.
