Minnesota State Holds Off Cougars in Sunday’s Doubleheader

Mankato, Minn. -- Minnesota State (27-10, 17-5 NSIC) hold off Sioux Falls (10-29, 9-16 NSIC) by finals of 4-3 and 13-11.
 
Minnesota State worked from behind most of game one as they found themselves in a two-run hole heading into the top of the third.
 
Junior Hunter Ranweiler led off the third inning with a single and later advanced to third on a sophomore Aidan Byrne single. Ranweiler would cross home after junior Nick Baker reached safely on an error by the third baseman for the Maverick first tally on the day.
 
The next inning, junior Mikey Gottschalk led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After freshman Louis Magers worked his 15th walk on the season, junior Hunter Ranweiler punched through an RBI single plating both Gottschalk and Magers.
 
Junior Nathan Culley (6-3) got the win for the Mavericks going four innings allowing three runs on five hits.
 
Senior Jack Zigan got the two-out save for his team-leading fifth save.
 
Grayson Skinner got tagged with loss surrendering four runs on five hits.
 
The Mavericks had a much more eventful start to their second game as opposed to the first game scoring 12 runs in the first four innings.
 
Sophomore Aidan Byrne led the Mavericks offense going 3-5 in the game with three runs scored and four RBIs to go along with his five homer on the season.
 
Junior Jackson Hauge launched his five-home run of the season collecting three RBIs on the swing to give the Mavericks a 12-1 lead.
 
The Cougars caught the Mavericks sleeping in the bottom of the sixes after rallying for nine runs cutting the Mavericks lead to one run.
 
Junior Adam Weed took stopped the Cougars momentum with his first homer for the purple and gold this season.
 
Senior Chandler Fochs ( 6-1) got the win going five and two-thirds innings surrendering 10 runs on 13 hits.
 
Caleb Ditmarson got tagged with the loss surrendering five runs on 10 hits.
 
The Mavericks are back in actions tomorrow as they look for the series against USF. The first pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
