SIOUX FALLS, S.D. --- The Minnesota State women's tennis team swept the University of Mary 4-0 Saturday in the semifinals of the NSIC Tournament.
With the win, MSU improves to 15-1 on the season. With the loss, UMary finishes its season with an 11-6 record. This marks MSU's second trip to the finals of the NSIC Tournament in team history and first since 2009.
The Mavericks secured the first point of the dual winning two of the three doubles matches.
Senior
Lois Page and sophomore
Avery Stilwell defeated Chloe Chong and Ilona Freitag 6-4 in the No. 1 doubles match, while the team of freshman
McKenna DeMarce and sophomore
Elizabeth Felderman bested Emily Needham and Samantha Purpura 6-2 in the No. 3 doubles match. The No. 2 doubles match between MSU's
Chiara Carnelutti and
Freia Lawrence and UMary's Hala Hossam Awad and Doaa Farouk Mohamed went unfinished.
MSU then secured the first three singles matches to claim the 4-0 win.
DeMarce defeated Purpura 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 6 singles match, before Lawrence defeated Mohamed 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 2 singles match. Freshman
Daria Podmogilnaia secured the dual for the Mavericks as she defeated Needham 7-5, 6-4 in the No. 5 singles match.
The No. 1 singles match between Page and Chong, the No. 3 singles match between Carnelutti and Awad and the No. 4 singles match between Stilwell and Freitag went unfinished.
Minnesota State takes on Augustana in the NSIC Tournament Championship on Sunday, at 10:30 a.m., in Sioux Falls, S.D.
