Minnesota State Dominates Bemidji State in Tuesday Doubleheader

SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- Minnesota State (17-5, 7-1 NSIC) piled on the runs against Bemidji State (2-23, 1-9 NSIC) winning both games by finals of 17-1 and 18-4.  
 
The last time the Mavericks scored 35 runs in a doubleheader was against Bemidji after scoring a combined 51 runs on April 11th, 2015.  
 
The Mavericks took advantage of the Beavers' mistakes scoring seven runs on the day on either walks or wild pitches. Through both games, the Beavers staff accumulated 15 walks, eight hit batters, and eight wild pitches. 
 
The Mavericks jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third without recording a hit.  
 
The next inning, sophomore Brock Johnson worked a free pass and advanced to second on a stolen base. He scored on a double down the right field line off the bat of junior Adam Schneider.  
 
Sophomore Aidan Byrne made sure Schneider came home by launching his third homer of the year extending the Mavericks' lead by seven.  
 
Junior Nick Baker then took a pitch to the arm and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Next batters, juniors Ryan Friedges and Hunter Ranweiler traded RBIs extending the Mavericks' lead to nine.  
 
Head Coach Matt Magers sent freshman Tanner Thompson to the plate as a pinch hitter for his second collegiate at-bat. The freshman launched his first homer and first collegiate hit 425 feet over the left field wall extending the Mavericks' lead to 11.  
 
Joining Thompson, sophomore Brock Johnson, and freshman Matthew Fleischhacker also hit homers to help the Mavericks to their 17-1 victory.  


Freshman Louis Magers (1-0) notched the win for the Mavericks going five innings allowing no runs on three hits while compiling seven strikeouts.  
 
Derek Hoffman (0-2) got tagged with the loss going two and two-thirds of an inning surrendering four runs on two hits. 
The Mavericks picked up where they left off offensively in the bottom of the second scoring 14 out of their 18 runs scored.  


Sophomore Aidan Byrne led off the inning with a triple to center field. The next batter Louis Magers launched his first collegiate homer to give the Mavericks a two-run lead.  
 
Junior Nick Baker kept the inning going after taking his fourth hit-by-pitch of the day. Baker now leads the team in hit-by-pitches after getting plunked eight times in four games.  
 
Fleishhacker moved Baker to third base with his second single on the day before junior Mikey Gottschalk singled to right field moving Fleishhacker to second and scoring Baker.  
 
The next batter junior Jackson Hauge launched a three-run shot for his second homer on the season extending the Mavericks' lead by six. After a Schneider walk, sophomore Aidan Byrne launched his second on the day and third of the season giving the Mavericks their eighth tallies of the game.


The Mavericks wrap up the bottom of the second after tacking on six more through walks and wild pitches. Sophomore Ryan Bachman capped off the Mavericks' second huge victory of the day with his first colligate home run.  
 
Junior Taisei Yahiro (2-0) notched the win for the Mavericks going three innings allowing no runs on three hits and striking out five.  
 
Isaiah Biehn (0-4) got tagged with the loss going an inning and two-thirds surrendering nine runs on eight hits.  
 
The Mavericks are back in action next Saturday as they take on the University of Mary.
