MARSHALL, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women’s golf team sent four golfers to the SMSU Mustang Invitational this weekend and finished second with a 319-310—629.  The tournament was played at the Marshall Golf Club, a par 72 course that played to 5,582 yards.

Augustana won the event with a 292-297—589, while the Vikings’ Lanie Veenendall won the event with a 68-76—144, good for even par.

The Mavericks improved four spots on day two of the event thanks in part to a combined eight birdies from freshman Victoria Woytassek and sophomore Lauren Rebrovich.

“Proud of these women – they are grinders,” said assistant coach Todd Pfingston. “We had chat last night after our round that our goal was to finish second and we went out today and executed.  We finished nine shots better than yesterday.”

Woytassek paced MSU with an even-par 72, registering her best score as a Maverick en route to finishing tied for sixth.  The freshman birdied back-to-back holes on the front nine before rattling off three straight birdies in the middle of her back nine.  Her five birdies was tied for the third most over the two day long event.  Woytassek shot a 79-72—151 in her 36 holes and finished tied for third in par-four scoring with a 4.13.

Rebrovich finished tied for 12th with a three-over 75 tallying a pair of birdies on the front nine and another on the back. For the event Rebrovich shot 80-75—15.  She also tied for third in scoring on par-fours with a 4.13. Freshman Emma Berge finished tied for 19th with a 77-81—158 while freshman Whitney Mullenbach finished 83-82—165, good for a tie for 37th.

As a team, the Mavericks averaged a 5.43 on the par fives, good for second in the field and a 4.28 on the par fours, which was also second.  MSU played the par threes to a 3.45, which was third overall.  The 12 birdies turned in by MSU is tied for the most in the event.

Minnesota State returns to action Monday as five golfers have travelled to Edmond, Okla., to participate in the Grace Shin Invitational.
