MANKATO, Minn. ---#16 Minnesota State travels up north this weekend to square off against second-seed Bemidji State and fourteenth-seed Minnesota Crookston. Last week, MSU battled Wayne State and Augustana in its home opener with both games going the Mavericks way. After six different players scored in MSU's 6-0 blowout against WSC,
Jenny Vetter and
Allie Williams came up big for a combined seven points in its match against Augustana. The Mavericks look to keep rolling against one of its oldest rivals, Bemidji State.
Facing BSU: Heading into the 21st matchup with BSU, the Mavericks are 6-2-2 in its last 10 matchup against the Beavers. Last season, Bemidji finished with an NSIC best 19-2-3 overall record and 13-0-2 against divisional opponents. In the previous match, the Mavericks took care of business beating BSU 4-2 in Bemidji.
Maille Mathis led the way last go-around scoring two goals early to send the Mavericks into the half with a 2-1 lead.
Allie Williams knocked home a late goal to lock up the win for MSU.
Scouting the Beavers: The BSU offense is led by fifth year Sara Wendt who is off to a hot start with two goals and an assist on the season. Wendt was the key to the Beavers success last season as she finished with a team high 41 points. In goal, senior Alyssa Stumbaugh has been the rock in goal for BSU over her tenor as a Beaver. Stumbaugh has started four games this season for a total of 360 minutes. She owns a .786 save percentage and a 1.20 goals-against average for a 2-1-1 record.
Facing UMC:The Mavericks come into this weekend with a lifetime 14-0 over the Golden Eagles. Last season UMC finished with an NCIS worst 1-17 overall record and an 0-9 record against divisional opponents. In the previous matchup, the Mavericks dominated Crookston 5-0 at The Pitch. In the first half, the Golden Eagles only allowed a
Mallie Mathis goal at the 37' mark keeping the game tight. After halftime, the Mavericks stepped on the gas scoring four goals in the second half.
Scouting the Golden Eagles: Crookston's offense is lead by senior Morgan Laplante and sophomore Abby Fettinger. Last season, both player were bright spots in a disappointing season each finishing with a team high six points. In goal, Kathryn Brainerd has started four games for UMC accumulating 360 minutes on the season. Brainerd owns a .767 save percentage and a 1.75 goals-against average for a 1-3 record.
