Wayne, Neb. --- The Minnesota State volleyball team dropped its second Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match of the weekend, falling at #5 Wayne State in three sets Saturday.
The host Wildcats defeated the Mavericks 25-12, 28-26, 25-17.
The loss gives the Mavericks a 1-9 overall record overall and a 0-2 record in NSIC action.
Sophomore Abigail Wolfe led the Mavericks with 11 kills, while sophomore Brooke Bolwerk recorded 18 assists. Sophomore Emma Loveall recorded 12 digs followed closely by senior Brenna Heese and Bolwerk with 11.
Kelsie Cada led the Wildcat offense with 15 kills, while Taya Beller added 13 kills. Rachel Walker passed out 37 assists, while Jessie Brandl led the team in digs with 13.
The first set saw the Wildcats lead early on as they built an 11-5 lead. The Mavericks got two points to close the gap, but Wayne State went on a seven point-run to extend the lead to 19-8. The Wildcats closed the set 25-12.
Kills by Loveall, Durant, Dille and Tietz will help the Mavericks go on a 4-2 run to put and in a 8-5 lead. MSU kept the lead all throughout the set by at least one point until 22-19 when the Wildcats went on a four-point-run to take the lead. The lead went back and forth till 26-26 and Wayne State took the last two points to claim the set 28-26.
The third set remained close early as Wayne State led 8-5. The Wildcats would then take the lead by at least 2 points all throughout the end of the set to complete the set 25-17 and take the match.
Coach Corey Phelps had a few words recapping the weekend for the Mavericks: "We battled this weekend. We played some of our best volleyball in the last two days and are going to continue to build on what we are doing. Augie and Wayne are great teams and I'm proud of what we did this weekend. We are going to be in the mix at the end of the season."
Next action for Minnesota State is next Friday and Saturday when Southwest Minnesota State and the University of Sioux Falls visit for a pair of home matches.
