BURNSVILLE, Minn. ---- Coming off their first NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Championship since 2016, Three Mavericks have earned NSIC yearly honors. Head coach Mike Turgeon, assistant coach Chris Parno and sprinter Denisha Cartwright have earned postseason accolades from the conference.
Coach Turgeon was voted the NSIC Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year in women's track by his fellow coaches following last week's conference championships. Turgeon led the Mavericks to their third NSIC championship and first since 2016. Under coach Turgeon, the Mavericks had six NSIC Champions and one relay team earn conference titles. Turgeon coached 10 student-athletes that have qualified for the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. He has helped his squad achieve the No. 4 ranking in division II. This is the first-time coach Turgeon has been named NSIC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year.
Coach Parno was voted NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Assistant coach of the Year in women's track and field. Chris Parno coached Maverick student-athletes that scored 89 of the teams 191 team points during the NSIC Championships last weekend. Under coach Parno's leadership, Makayla Jackson and Denisha Cartwright were the top two-point scorers for Minnesota State at the NSIC Championships with Jackson scoring 32.5 and Cartwright scoring 28.5 points, respectively. Three Maverick student-athletes set three NSIC records at the NSIC Championships under hist tutelage. This is the first time that coach Parno has earned NSIC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Assistant Coach of the Year honors.
Denisha Cartwright, a junior from Nassau, Bahamas, has been named NSIC Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year. Cartwright was the second-highest point scorer for the Mavericks last week at the NSIC Outdoor Championships tallying 28.5 total points. Cartwright set a NSIC record in the 100m dash with a time of 13.28 on her way to the NSIC title. She is currently ranked first in division II nationally in the 100m dash event and holds the 16th fastest time in the 100m hurdles in division II history. Cartwright was a member of the championship 4x100m relay team last weekend at the NSIC Championships. In addition to the 100m, Cartwright earned All-NSIC honors in the 200m dash and is ranked fifth in the nation in the event.
Cartwright, Parno and Turgeon along with the rest of the Mavericks outdoor track and field program are preparing for the upcoming 2022 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Championships, being held in Allendale, Mich., on May 26-28.
