OWATONNA, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's tennis team opened its NSIC schedule with a pair of wins Sunday as it bested Bemidji State 5-2 and Minnesota Crookston 7-0.
With the wins, MSU now owns an 8-2 overall record, including a 2-0 NSIC record. BSU dropped to 3-3, including a 1-3 conference record, while UMC fell to 0-4 overall and 0-4 in NSIC action.
The Mavericks began the day with a 5-2 win over Bemidji State.
MSU won two of the three doubles matches to claim the first point of the dual. Junior
Tristen Bryant-Otake and freshman
Avery Stilwell won the No. 1 doubles match 7-5, against Sophie Groen and Shaelyn Johnson, while freshmen
Elizabeth Felderman and
Brynn Psooy bested Isabela Nelson and Taylor Offerdahl 6-2 in the No. 3 doubles match.
The Mavericks then won four of the six singles matches to complete the 5-2 win. Bryant-Otake won the No. 1 singles match 6-2, 6-1 vs. Groen, while Felderman topped Nicoleta Anestiadi 3-6, 6-1, 12-10 in the No. 3 singles match. Freshman
Hana Minisy bested Lany Rutkowski 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 4 singles match, while freshman
Taylor Julsrud defeated Nelson 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 5 singles match.
Minnesota State finished its day with a 7-0 sweep of Minnesota Crookston.
The Mavericks won two of the doubles matches to start the day against the Golden Eagles. Bryant-Otake and Stilwell posted a 6-0 win over Madeleine Schneider and Sarah Velasquez in the No. 1 doubles match, while Felderman and Psooy defeated Tasha Achermann and Samantha Gutierrez 6-0 in the second doubles match.
MSU then won all six singles matches to complete the sweep. Bryant-Otake bested Schneider 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles match, while Stilwell posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Michelle Swyter in the No. 2 singles match. Minisy earned a 6-1, 6-1 won over Velasquez in the third singles match, while Julsrud defeated Achermann 6-4, 6-1 in the fourth singles match. Freshman
Lacee Fedeler bested Gutierrez 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 5 singles match, while sophomore
Sarah Johansen defeated Kaydance Hinn 6-3, 6-0 to in the No. 6 singles match.
Minnesota State continues its season on Saturday as it takes on the Sioux Falls Cougars in Owatonna, Minn. The dual is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
