Men's Hockey | #16 Mavericks Fall in Overtime to Bemidji State

    Mankato, Minn. --- 16th-rated Minnesota State dropped a 4-3 overtime decision to Bemidji State in Central Collegiate Hockey Association action in Mankato, Minn., Thursday night.
 
Now 10-8-1 for the season with tonight's result, Minnesota State stands 7-5-1 in CCHA games. 
 
The Beavers got on the board first when Alexander Lundman finished off a two-on-one at 17:12 of the opening stanza after taking a pass from Lleyton Roed.  Minnesota State junior center David Silye took the puck off the near boards and toe-dragged the puck to the middle of the boards before roofing a shot past Mattias Sholl for his team-leading 13th goal of the year.
 
BSU forward Jakub Lewandowski slid across the top of the slot before scoring at 2:05 of the second and after two periods of play the Beavers held a 2-1 advantage.
 
Freshman center Christian Fitzgerald's blast from the right circle with the Mavericks on the power play tied the game at 1:57 of the third period. The goal is the fourth in the last three games for the Coquitlam, B.C., native. Then just over a minute later, Minnesota State took its first lead of the game when senior forward Ryan Sandelin tipped a shot from Akito Hirose past Sholl for his eighth goal of the season.  BSU responded at 7:22 when Aaron Myers found a loose puck at the top of the MSU crease and put a backhander into the net to send the game into overtime.
 
BSU senior defenseman Kyle Looft scored a power play goal at 4:32 in overtime to win it for the Beavers. 
 
Minnesota State freshman netminder Alex Tracy, who finished with 21 saves in the game, now owns a 6-2-0 record on the season.
 
Minnesota State and Bemidji State (8-5-4, 6-2-3 CCHA) close out the two-game league series Friday with a 7:07 p.m. face-off scheduled.
