#16 Mavericks Continue NSIC Action this Week Against Warriors and Peacocks

MANKATO, Minn. --- #16 Minnesota State continues NSIC competition this week as it travels to Winona State for a Thursday tip-off at 7:30 p.m. The Mavericks then finish their weekend at Taylor Center on Saturday as they host Upper Iowa at 4:00 p.m.
  
Minnesota State History: The 2022-23 season marks the 101st campaign as a varsity sport for Minnesota State men's basketball. The Mavericks are 1,404-933 (.600) in 2,337 games since the program's inception in the 1920-21 season. MSU capped its 33rd and final season as a member of the NCC in 2008 and owned a 283-267 (.515) record in 550 league games played. In the NSIC, MSU owns a 200-93 (.682) record to go with four regular-season championships and two tournament championships.

Against the Warriors: Thursday's game between Minnesota State and Winona State marks their 144th all-time meeting with MSU leading the series 90-53. The Mavericks and Warriors split their season series last season, with MSU winning their most recent encounter 89-85 at Taylor Center.

Sophomore Brady Williams notched 16 points and nine rebounds, while sophomore Harrison Braudis tallied 13 points and four rebounds. Sophomore Tyrell Stuttley tallied seven points and five rebounds also.

Connor Drew notched 15 points for the Warriors, while Luke Martens posted 12 points and seven rebounds. Connor Dillon added 13 points and five rebounds also.

Head Coach Matt Margenthaler owns an 18-24 record against Winona State, including a 7-12 record on the road.

Against the Peacocks: Saturday's game between Minnesota State and Upper Iowa marks their 34th meeting, with the Mavericks owning a 23-10 record against the Peacocks. MSU and UIU split their season series last season, including a 68-63 win for the Peacocks in Fayette in their most recent encounter.

Sophomore Brady Williams tallied 12 points and eight rebounds, while senior Kelby Kramer notched four points and 10 rebounds. 

Jake Hilmer led the Peacocks with 17 points and four assists, while Luca Duax tallied 12 points. Nick Reid hauled in 10 rebounds also.

Head Coach Matt Margenthaler owns a 23-10 record against Upper Iowa, including a 12-4 record at Taylor Center.

Concerning the Mavericks: Minnesota State enters the week the owner of a 7-0 record,including a 1-0 NSIC record, as it defeated Concordia-St. Paul (96-78) and Bethany Lutheran College (116-98) at Taylor Center last week.

As a team, MSU is averaging 91.0 points and 40.4 rebounds per game while shooting 52.7% from the field. The Mavericks are shooting 42.5% from three-point range and have passed out 120 assists and blocked 27 shots.

Junior Malik Willingham is averaging 22.9 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game this season. Sophomore Harrison Braudis is averaging 14.6 points per game and is shooting 66.1% from the field. Sophomore Kyreese Willingham has tallied 12.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per game also, while sophomore Brady Williams has posted 11.1 points and 5.7 rebounds per game as well.

The Mavericks are led by Matt Margenthaler, who is in his 22nd season at Minnesota State. He owns a career record of 443-197 (.692).

Concerning the Warriors: Winona State enters the week the owner of 5-1 record, including a 0-1 NSIC record, as it fell to Upper Iowa 82-81, before defeating Viterbo 83-68 last week.

As a unit, WSU is averaging 72.8 points and 38.7 rebounds per game this season, while shooting 40.6% from the field and 32.7% from long range. The Warriors have passed out 80 assists and have committed 50 turnovers.

Connor Dillon leads WSU with 20.0 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Connor Drew has tallied 13.3 points and 6.2 rebounds per game as well, while Luke Martens has tallied 12.2 points and 7.4 rebounds a game.

Winona State is coached by Todd Eisner who is in his eighth season as head coach of the Warriors and his 25th season at the collegiate level. He owns an overall record of 521-252.

Concerning the Peacocks: Upper Iowa enters the week the owner of a 4-3 record, including a 1-0 NSIC record. Last week, UIU defeated Winona State (82-81), Wingate (91-84) and Elizabeth City State (87-79 OT).

As a team, the Peacocks are averaging 80.6 points and 36.7 rebounds per game this season, while shooting 42.5% from the field and 34.2% from three point range. UIU has passed out 85 assists, but has committed 81 turnovers.

Jake Hilmer is averaging 22.6 points and 5.2 assists a game this season, while Lucas Duax  has posted 19.1 points and 4.9 rebounds a game. Nick Reid has tallied 13.4 points and 9.9 rebounds per game also.

Brooks McKowen is in his 10th season as head coach at Winona State. He owns a 154-119 record.
