Minnesota State Suffers Third Straight One-goal Loss

Mankato, Minn.--- MSU looked to earn its first win on the season as they traveled to Duluth with some a new face on the bus. Jamie Nelson had her season debut after only playing three games during the 2021 season.
The Mavericks found themselves in penalty trouble early in the first period for a "too many players" penalty. Head Coach John Harrington sent out team captain Claire Butorac and Kennedy Bobyck to kill the penalty resulting in smart, methodical play.
Butorac outhustled the Bulldogs defense on the kill to steal the puck behind the Bulldogs net. The veteran forward flipped her pass into the slot finding the stick of Bobyck one-timing the puck over the shoulder of goaltender Emma Soderberg.
The Bulldogs refused to play on their heels as they peppered the Mavericks netminder Lauren Barbro from all directions. The MSU defense provided some help blocking 18 shots for Barbro compared to UMD's five.
Duluth finally broke through at the 12:56 mark of the first period off a tip-in from Kylie Hanley tying the game at one. The Mavericks went into the second intermission with a disproportionate 18-6 shot count in favor of UMD.
Both teams went into the second period with similar physicality levels that helped null the scoring chances for both the second and third period. With a fantastic effort in net from Lauren Barbro stopping 40 of 41, the Maverick and Bulldogs went into their first overtime period this season for both teams.
With just 14 seconds into the overtime period, UMD's Ashton Bell maneuvered around a defending Bobyck and finished her impressive deke on Barbro to shut down the Mavericks hope. MSU is back in action tomorrow for its rematch against Duluth.
