Mankato, Minn. --- Senior captain Brendan Furry scored in overtime to give #8 Minnesota State a 3-2 win over Bowling Green Friday at Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center.
The Mavericks, who now stand 4-3-0 for the season with tonight's result, are 1-0-0 in CCHA games.
The Mavericks held a 2-0 lead heading into the third period in the game, but BGSU scored twice in forcing overtime.
Junior center Ondrej Pavel collected a rebound to score his first goal of the season on a backhander at 17:33 of the opening period in giving the Mavericks a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore forward Tanner Edwards scored his first goal of the year after he retrieved his own shot before putting the puck past BGSU netminder Christian Stoever at 3:50 of the second and after 40 minutes of action, the Mavericks held a 2-0 lead.
BGSU pulled within one when forward Adam Pitters found a loose puck in the slot and wristed it past Alex Tracy at 3:39 of the third. Then, with the Falcons on a power play and Stoever on the bench for an extra attacker, Austin Swankler tied the game at 19:04 with a six-on-four marker.
Furry's goal, his first of the year, came when the Toledo, Ohio native took a pass from Lucas Sowder and fired a shot that trickled through Stoever's pads at the 4:05 mark of extra session. Sowder finished with two assists in the contest (he also assisted on Pavel's first-period tally).
The Mavericks outshot the Falcons 32-15 in the contest and have now won the last 10 meetings with Bowling Green.
Freshman netminder Alex Tracy had 13 saves in the game and now stands 3-1-0 on the season.
The Mavericks and the Falcons close out the two-game league series Saturday with a 6:07 faceoff scheduled.
