McKay Hits 100 Career-Win Plateau as #1 Minnesota State Skates Past Arizona State

Mankato, Minn. ---  Senior netminder Dryden McKay hit the 100 career-win plateau as #1-rated Minnesota State downed Arizona State 5-3 in nonconference men's college hockey action in Mankato Saturday night.

McKay, who turned aside 21 shots, stands 25-4-0 on the year with tonight's win. And with 100 career victories McKay ranks third all-time in NCAA Division I men's hockey in wins.  Only Marty Turco (Michigan 1995-98, 127 wins) and Steve Shields (Michigan, 1991-94, 111 wins) rank ahead of the Downers Grove, Ill., native.

The Mavericks, who have won five games in a row and 14 wins in the last 15 contests, got a goal and two assists from junior winger Cade Borchardt in downing the visiting Sun Devils.

Minnesota State owned a 12-11 advantage in shots on goal, but found itself trailing 1-0 after the first 20 minutes of action. ASU forward Jack Becker converted on a power play chance, collecting a rebound and shoveling it into the net at 19:41 for his seventh goal of the year.

A trio of goals turned the tide for the Mavericks in the second period. Great puck movement in the offensive zone that ended with a one-timer for a power play goal from the right circle from senior forward Reggie Lutz knotted things up at 6:19.  The Mavericks took a 2-1 lead after Akito Hirose's shot from the point snuck through at 16:35 and it became a 3-1 lead at 17:56 when junior forward Cade Borchardt collected his own rebound to score at 17:56. The goal is the 12th of the year for Borchardt, who also drew assists on the goals by Lutz and Hirose in the period.

It became a 4-1 Minnesota State lead when, playing 4x4, junior winger Ryan Sandelin stepped across the blue line and ripped a shot from the top of the circle that beat Ben Kraws high stickside at 13:24 of the third. ASU freshman forward Josh Doan scored a pair of extra-attacker goals for ASU to make it a 4-3 game, but Sandelin's empty-net tally at 19:45, his team-high 17th of the season, sealed the win for the Mavericks.

The Mavericks (25-5-0) resume Central Collegiate Hockey Association action next weekend with road contests at Bowling Green Friday and Saturday.
