DULUTH, Minn. -- The Mavericks saw their three-game win streak come to an end with a 4-2 loss to the No. 5-rated Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs during a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game played at AMSOIL Arena, Friday afternoon.
MSU now stands 12-12-1 overall with an 8-12-1 record in the WCHA. UMD improved to 15-8-0 and 12-7-0 in the WCHA with the win.
Maverick senior forward Brittyn Fleming, who scored a goal and had an assist in Friday's game, notched her 100th and 101st career points. Fleming joins Maggie Fisher (109 points from 2005-09) as the only MSU women's hockey players to eclipse the 100-point mark.
The Bulldogs struck first in Friday's contest with a goal from Taylor Anderson at 5:17 of the first period. MSU's junior forward Kennedy Bobyck tied the game, 1-1, at 11:16 after she picked up a rebound and fired it back to the top-right corner. Elizabeth Giguere helped the Bulldogs reclaim the lead 54 seconds later, nine seconds into a power play at the 12:12 mark. Then, with two-tenths of a second remaining in the first period, Clara Van Wiernen fired a shot from the right wall that had eyes for the net, sneaking under Maverick netminder Calla Frank for a 3-1 UMD lead. Despite trailing by two goals after 20 minutes, the Mavericks had the upper hand in shots on goal, 16-7.
In the second period, Kelsey King carried the puck into the Bulldogs' zone before finding Fleming with a 2-on-1 net-front feed that Fleming tapped in at 12:27 to shrink the deficit to one. The Bulldogs led the Mavericks 3-2 after 40 minutes of play and owned a 17-7 advantage in shots during the middle period for a 24-23 edge in the game.
The third period saw UMD get an insurance goal to extend to a 4-2 lead after Taylor Stewart her shot from the left point deflected off a Maverick and past Frank at 14:25. The Bulldogs held on there for the remainder of the period to come out on top by a final score of 4-2.
In goal for MSU, Frank, now 10-10-1 on the season, stopped 28 of UMD's 32 shots in the contest.
In the end, shots on goal sided with UMD by a 32-29 margin. The Bulldogs were the only side to score with the advantage in Friday's affair. While UMD sported a 1-for-3 clip on the power play, MSU was unable to convert on two chances with the power play.
The Mavericks and Bulldogs rematch Saturday with another 3:07 p.m. face-off at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth.
