MANKATO, Minn. -- The Minnesota State women's soccer team upended the Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles with a 5-0 victory, Sunday afternoon at The Pitch.
The Mavericks (4-2-1, 2-1-1 NSIC) scored once in the first half before adding four more goals in the second half to take down the Golden Eagles (1-6-0, 1-3-0).
Freshman Maille Mathis scored the first goal of the match and in her career in the 37th minute by following up on rebound from an initial shot by sophomore Shelby Lund. The Mavericks carried a 1-0 lead into the break.
In the second half, freshman Ashlyn Watt on an assist from freshman Claire Cater in the 48th minute. Ten minutes later in the 58th minute, Cater scored a goal of her own with a header off a cross pass from junior Caitlin Brown. MSU upped its lead to four moments later when junior Jenny Vetter scored a goal off a feed from sophomore Allie Williams in the 59th minute. The Mavericks scored their final goal of the match with six seconds to spare when freshman Rachel Luedtke scored her first collegiate goal to make it 5-0. Assists went to Louisa Shromoff and Sydney DePrenger.
In goal for the Mavericks, freshman Clare Longueville started the match in net for the Mavericks and played 63:54 before another freshman in Ava Blackney subbed in for the final 26:06. Both Maverick goalkeepers stopped one shot in the combined effort to earn the clean sheet. On the other end, Abby Olsen made 18 stops in the match for the Golden Eagles.
The Mavericks dominated the Golden Eagles by a margin of 44-3 in shot attempts with an advantage in shots on goal of 23-2. MSU finished the match with the upper hand in corners as well 12-2.
The Mavericks hit the road next weekend for conference matches at MSU Moorhead, Friday at 3:00 p.m., and Northern State, Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
